Comp Issues

I have an O2 P5 and just replaced both of my O2 sensors recently. I went in to have the inspection done after I drove about 60 miles so the comp would reset. They told me they couldn't do the inspection because there were still 2 issues that were "Not Ready": The CAT and the EGR (I think?). So, I drove it some more. I've driven about 137 miles total since the O2 sensors were replaced and there is no check engine light on, and went in to have my inspection done hoping the comp would have reset, alas it has not.

Has anyone had this issue before? How long did you have to drive? I've done about 50 miles of it on the highway. Suggestions?

The mechanic said "Drive it some more, sometimes you have to put 200 miles on the car before everything will reset." I think that might be bull s*** though.

In all my other cars, to reset the computer I would disconnect the battery and step on the brakes for a minute. I don't see why it would be any different for the protege.

Depending on the system (catalytic converter, EGR, etc.), the car's computer runs performance tests. Some, like the O2 sensors are run continuously, but others, like the catalytic converter, are only checked periodically, and under a very specific set of conditions.

Every time you disconnect the battery you erase the computer's memory of these tests, and it has to perform them all again at least once before the car can be "ready". To the OP, I'm guessing that the test for your catalytic converter is the one that has not been run yet.

If you download the shop manual, there is a section towards the beginning that details the "repair verification" steps needed to complete these tests (i.e., it tells you how fast you need to be going and for how long to get this test to run).

I just had it tested again and it still is not ready. It's still the Catalytic Converter and the EVAP system.

I'm going to try and run those tests. I should have another update tomorrow.

206 miles, still CAT and EVAP system are not ready. WTF?

when is the last time you got gas? the CAT monitor is almost always the one thats last to reset. put like fiive gallon in the tank to make the needle move up. the Gas is part of the evap, and the needle moving back up may register to the ecu that things are ok.

2001 and up year models are allowed one monitor not to be ready. 2000 and below are allowed two. so if you get one to be ready, you will be good to take it.

ok, thats weird, it has never taken my car over 50 miles. but i shut down to where the coolant is cold then start and etc. the coolant temp IIRC is part of a determining factor of the drive cycles. has to go under a certain temp upon starting to register as a cycle.

strange indeed.
