Cold Air Intakes

awesome! im gona take all that stock airbox s*** off, should the snow up here in canada worry me? well it do anything? any type of weather for that matter? also if its just better to pull that stuff off why did mazda put all that stuff on and decrease air flow?

I have no idea why half the stuff they put on the car is there, but im sure theres an explaination for it. If you accually take the time to look at it you can see that the seals on the hood accually cut off all chances of air getting to that front piece, unless you cut a hole in the top of your grille insert(that top black piece), then your not picking up much air. Having your box like mine shouldnt have any problems with snow, i use it like that in the rain all the time and have no problems.

Well theres really only one piece to take off, heres a pic of what im running right now, its basically a SRI with a box around a filter instead of the cone, heck i could probably just stick a cone filter on there instead of the box if i wanted too.

I dont know how much more power, but it does help some, its getting more air for sure.

i actually did that. stuck my cone filter in the box and removed all the plastic pieces. it gave it more of the throaty sound a sri does, but i'd wager there was zero power gain. not to mention the risk of something getting past the cone filter.

How much did u remove before the box? it appears that there r 2 parts, the big flat piece that sits under the hood and another that turns upward just in-front of the box, im just curious if u took both off? (the pic was hard to tell)

Yeah, I shoulda got a better pic, I only took the first piece off, that second piece really isnt in the way of any air flow and will help catch any water or anything, and its kinda holding up the box I think.

You know, I noticed that also. I still can't figure out how the fresh air "scoop" gets any air to begin with. It's as if the engineers went to great lengths to ensure no air gets into the motor.

There are also a few weird "resonator" boxes in various parts of the intake.

I'd be very curious to hear any guesses/theories/explanations behind the design of this.

Yeah me too, its prefectly sealed off by two sets of seals on the underside of the hood.

god I wish I was a moderator....

Easy install. Hardest part is taking apart the mud shield in the wheel well. If you can use a screwdriver, ratchet and pliers (to get the stock clamps off), you're in good shape.

Even the ebay CAI's w/ a good (K&N) filter will give comprable (read: a wee bit) performance to the expensive ones.

Huh? No one said anything about it being hard to install. And you need to be a mod why?

I was answering the 1st question asking how hard it was to install.....

In a far away land at the top of you screen, there is the mystical beast known as the search button. This beast has only ever been used by 14 brave forum members who took their mouces (mice?) and made the treck to the top of mount taskbar, and clicked it.

And I know since I've been here, I've seen at least 538 threads abt intakes
