Cold air Intake

Yeah, I have this problem with my celica GT-S with Injen CAI. Check engine light goes on once every few months, then a week later it goes off. With the electronic chips that are in cars now-adays it's really hard to use mods that play with air-flow/fuel ratios without these types of things happening. The chips are designed for specific settings and when those things aren't, you'll get a cel. I lived with it in my celica, but when my Mazda3 comes, i'm not sure going to want to deal with it, especially for 5-7 hp. Although the sound that comes with a CAI is totally worth it. Rough... (bang)

Pls excuse my total "noob-ness" question that I'm about to ask; having a CEL light come on isn't a big issue, right? It's just a sensor activating the light in the cluster, and indicating that "something" is wrong.....am I correct? And we know what's causing that light to come on, and that's the CAI, right?

As soon as one comes out on the market, I'll be all over it. Here is the problem, I don't have the time to wait for the Mazda speed 3 in 2005 so how would one get that type of HP out of a regular 3? I hope a Turbo or super charger conversion comes out as well.

Do you guys reset your computers after you install a CAI?

It's a good idea to do it. The ECU would adapt better to the air flow increase. Some ECU's do adapted to the driving and engine conditions so when you reset the system your wiping clean, some of the past inputs.

How do you reset it on the 3? On my 626 it was dis the bat. recon the bat and hold the brake down for 30 secs...is it the same for all mazdas?

Also I was looking under the hood since I only got it yesterday and there is not much room for a CAI.......has anyone seen the 2.3l in the 6? there must be more room under there?

I was thinking it would be a 45deg then a 90deg and then a maybe 1-3" straight piece before the filter?

Yeah, you should always reset your ECU after installing the CAI. This can really help to avoid CEL problems all together. If you can get the ECU to think that this is the normal operation then you are gold. Like I said, I would only get a cell once in a few months. Resetting the ECU again would clear the CEL right up.

Downsides to resetting the ECU. Lose all your other settings: pre-set radio stations, and the most annoying thing, your car alarm and remote door un-locks no longer working.

Procedure to reset the ECU on my celica was to disconnect the Negative from the battery for 5 minutes which is why all the memory is lost. I'd assume the same for the Mazda3.

How did you get your remotes to work again?

The remotes have to be reprogrammed. Usually there's a control button on the remote control box embeded in the car. And you concurrently press a button on the remote to get there codes in sync again. This is how it is my celica, however I have a Viper E550 alarm system, so I can't speak for how this is done on the Mazda3. Maybe if you're lucky you can find some info on repgramming the remotes in your manual, but I doubt they'd have it. You might actually need to talk to your dealer, or if anyone has the Mazda3 service & technical manual.

I re-set the PCM on my ZX2 numerous times and never had to re-program my remotes. Only the radio and clock.

Injen CAI update

I got the kit via UPS yesterday, BUT the car is in the shop for a couple of days. 5k mile "checkup", oil change (free for like from the dealer), alignment job, and the airbag light on the dash was always on. I'm not getting my hopes up that this Injen is gonna work in the 3, but will let ya'll know, and will take pics.
Stay tuned...

no offense but I jsut dont see it fitting.......but I hope you make it fit and tell use how so we can all get a group buy going

I agree on a group buy, i just hope it fits!!!!

Update: Tried to fit the 6 system on my 3 last night, and it did not work. Can't even use it as a short-stalk system (short pipe with filter on the end, inside the engine bay). Filter needs to be 2-3 inches shorter. May be able to cut the tubes (last resort). Needed the car for work for the rest of the week, so didn't dig any further into the install (put the stock system back on). Theres some sort of box under the drivers side headlight ass'y: anyone know what this is? Also, looks like the main fuse block, under the hood on the drivers side, would need to be moved. Injen EMed me that "From what we understand it will fit. We have not had the opportunity to test fit it yet. We have heard from many sources though.". I don't see how, without some noteable modding of the Injen system.
Wait for them to release a model-specific system for the 3.
Glad to be a guinea pig for ya....

That just sucks. Sorry bud. (stooges)

sry to hear that ....u must feel like this just happened(wedge) (injen on the right)

Sucks man, sorry that it didnt work. Thanks for the info though, you helped a lot of 3 owners out here. i heard that AEM is in production of a Intake right now, dont know how ture the info is but ill keep my eye out.

Thanks again!

I knew it was a long shot that it would fit. I don't feel that Injen misled me since I ordered the part before asking them, anyhow. No big deal. FWIW, it looks like the stock system may already be a type of CAI. There is a large tube coming into the engine bay from behind the front bumper cover, down low. Comes into the engine bay down low, nice smooth bend up into the airbox lower half. Large box, adequate sized filter (though I'd really like to drop a K&N into it), Then a side exit for the tube over to the throttle body. I was in a little hurry so didn't scope out the exact intake mouth of the first tube, but seems to be the case. May be hard to iimprove on, though Injen claims decent gains for the 6 with their system, and one might assume its a similar layout. Just something to think about...

Ugh - that sucks. Although, from looking at the 3 engine bay, I would have been pretty sure it wouldn't fit. Irresponsible of Injen (they've been awesome otehrwise - very helpful on mazda6club and mazda6tech!) and brave of you to try.

FWIW - it adds a VERY NICE growl to the 6i (I don't have it, but hope to soon). This is on top of the already much nicer sounding exhaust on the 6i (than the 3s).

Don't worry yourselves - the 3 is more tuner-oriented than the 6 and you guys are sure to have loads more, and possibly better (bang for buck) stuff coming out for your cars than us 6 owners ... patience! And the aftermarket support for the 6 is already impressive, for a non-mainstream brand and model!
