1999 protege dx 1.6l
i know that someone might already asked this question, but i can't find the answer anywhere.
can i use an injen rd 6065 (made for the 1.8 engine) on a 1.6 engine? will it fit or will i have to do some mods?
or is there any other brands that i can use instead?
thank you so much in advance to anyone who could provide me with an answer.

no, you can't.

there's probaly a plenthora of brands on ebay, but corksport.com sells CAI's and RAI's for the 1.6L

I have Simota SRIs in stock for the 1.6, but I am out of the CAI.
Welcome to the forum, and you can check the link in my sig for more info.

Didn't alot of people have problems installing the CAI's on their 1.6's? 'Check Engine Light' always came on or something?

Yeah, I got my first CEL after my CAI was installed. I still get hesitation from time to time, but the CEL is what is most annoying. You can do the hesitation fix, which might clear the CEL, but more than likely you'll have to do the fix and then reset the ECU or have a place like Autozone or Advance Auto Parts clear the code for you. I plan on upping my fuel pressure to keep my car from running so lean and hopefully that'll take care of the CEL. If not, then Im stuck doing the bike inner tube fix. Anyone know exactly how that works or how to do that?

It just seems like more of a hassle than it is really worth for the 2-3 HP you gain. Just my opinion though.

actually,i fixed the problem....i just took out all the front part of the air dam located before the air filter box which leave about 3 inch hole just in front of the filter of the air induction, then put an K&N filter...car is running much better and sounds much better as well.

dont buy an intake for the 1.6l. i did something similiar to wat chris did. i removed the filter from my airbox, and cut the filter paper completely, leaving the bracket and the rubber sealer around it. keep the plastic edge of the filter and the rubber seal in the airbox. the piping that sticks out the airbox to connect to the ram is perfect for a 3" cone filter. you might have to shove it a little to fit it, but it works great for me.

do you have a pix of that? are you keeping the top of the filter box also?and what brand of filter did you get for that...b/c i might do the same thing if it is better...i am looking at a injen 3" with 6"base,5"height and 4"top..

of course your going to need the top of the box. i dont have ne pix my camera isnt in tack with the comp. i have a weapon r filter. i think any normal sized one will do. i sure wish i had pix to show everyone with a 1.6l, but its basicly wat u did except you put a cone filter on the pipe thats sticking out the front of the airbox. its gonna fit snug on the radiator and headlight.

no doesnt seem like it. if u feel so u can get a heat sheild. thats about the same spot my sri placed the filter in anyway. did u try it? hows it ride?

o u may also have to scoot your battery back and get some pliers and tear off the airbox stud that is on the battery platform so the box can fit better.

I actually haven't fixed my hesitation yet. I reset my ECU a couple times and the car ran fine for a few days, but then it came back on. I have a constant CEL now due to a "Misfire in Cylinder #3". As far as the hesitation goes, I might have a small leak around one of the seals or around my MAF. So Im going to do the soapy water thing and see if I see any bubbles. If so, then I know what the problem is and will try to make the seal for the MAF sensor. While Im doing that, I might also try to adjust my stock fuel pressure and see if that will help keep away the "running too lean" issues" the CAI is known to create.

heres the pic

I got the simota cold air intake for protege from Protephile and I have not had any problems with it. sounds great and never got a CEL or hesitation. I would recommend getting at least the short ram from him.

You used your stock MAF, right? Haven't had to modify it in anyway?
