Coil relocation? (Nology style)

I know it's pretty well agreed that the Nology wires are a ton of money for a debatable (at best) performance benefit, but I'm more interested in the way they relocate the coils. For those who haven't looked at them, basically you pull the plug boots off the coils, mount the coils on a bracket, and then run wires from the coil to the boot.

So my question is, can that all be done with off-the-shelf wires, or is the connection between the coil and the boot it sits on something application specific? I separated one of my coils last night to see, but it didn't look like any standard plug wire connection I'd ever seen.

Sub. Im looking to upgrade as well. but have heard so so reviews on the Nologys.

me and a friend of mine have been talking about this so i wouldnt have to purchase 1.8 coils....

It might just be on the Nology kits, but there is a ground strap on each wire that attaches to the valve cover. But, I don't see why you couldn't just re-mount the coils and run a basic set of spark plug wires.

Yeah, I'm not so worried about the grounding straps. Mostly just unsure of whether a regular plug wire can be used to connect the plug boot to the coil. If nobody knows for sure, I might just bring one into a parts store and see what they can show me. I'll be sure to report back if I find anything.

i may just grab some wires and try it and see what happens. my buddy has the nology setup and he put it on, his car barely ran, so he took them off.

I just put on my Nology wires last weekend. Turned out pretty good. I just need to make a bracket for a 2nd mounting point.

The coils need to be grounded to the engine. Build a bracket and bolt them down, then pick up a universal msd wiring kit and make your own wires. Done.

This is exactly what I was thinking last night. And where would one get one of these wire kits?

The Nology wires are garbage. Search on here. I was one of many to have constant misfires, dead cylinders, and melted wires.

Oh I was talking about the msd make your own wire kits. Also, on said kits, how do you go about getting the right ends? I will be using a 1.8 VC I got and I know the ends are different.

+1 That's the main thing I'm trying to learn as well. I have no problem putting together my own wire kit, I just have no idea how to specify the connectors between the coil and the boot.

It's not difficult. Go to your local speed shop and pick up a roll of plug wire, then you'll need 4 long boots, 4 right angle boots with male ends for the coils, some plug ends, and some crimpers. It's really easy to make the cables, I've done it on a few cars.

Kick ass. Ill be doing this soon. Once my 1.8 VC is back from powder coating.

Another question I have is does the length of the wire matter? Like if its longer than normal will that affect the spark?

You cut the wire to whatever length you need and then crimp the ends on.

Pardon me if I'm being a bit dense here, but you're saying that the connector style between the coils and the boots they sit on is a standard style, correct? That's the part that I was unsure of. :)
