Cobb Intake Vs Mazdaspeed CAI - Loudness?

Anyone heard both by any chance?

I don't want to ruin this car by making it super loud, its nice and smooth and quiet now and makes good power, but all you guys seem to love your intakes so i got to weigh the sound vs power thing.....hmmm

I have the mazdaspeed cai and its audible enough and the extra oomph is noticeable. as far as the cobb, I would assume it makes less power and its louder.(just a guess)

Haven't heard the mazdaspeed intake, but the cobb intake lets you hear the turbo noises more clearly, you can hear it spool and you can hear the air rushing through the filter in boost, and of course the factory BOV.

But as for making the engine sound a lot louder nah, unless you are in boost you won't notice its there, and then in boost you just hear turbo spoolage :o)

on a scale of 1 - 10 of loudness difference, 1 being no change and 10 being removing the muffler, I would rate it a 3.

I hate you guys, going to order the Cobb Later in the months. That 3 rating really did it subpar, you bastard...jk thaks for the info.

Subpar, you have the cobb, feel any butt dyno difference?

I just installed my Cobb yesterday. Love it so far.

Did you see this:

I had a custom short ram setup just like the one above, and those mushroom filters let a lot more air through. Made a big difference.

Of course I don't have an MS3, but I do have the DISI, so I wanted to chime in on my SRI, The intake makes the Turbo much more apparent, but with the music up +40 i can't hear it at all. The engine also has more of a grunt when not in boost, sounds very good, kinda coarse like the 2.0T but not as loud.

So do you think the mazdaspeed CAI would be quieter then the Cobb? I'm sure there's a difference, but could it be that much?

I'll make a video of the cobb intake later today. Maybe someone with a mzspd intake could post one up too.

I haven't heard the mazdaspeed intake, but I know that when I put my injen CAI on my old 2zz corolla, it sounded a HELL of a lot louder, now I'm not sure if that was b/c of the metal piping, or due to the fact that the engine had an 11.5:1 compression ration and a redline at 8500 rpms.

I personally really like the cobb intake, its not too loud, gives good gains and doesn't get in the way of potentially going with a FMIC.

I can't make any claims as to the loudness of the mazdaspeed intake, but from everything I've heard, it give slightly better gains. I doubt the difference is truly noticeable.

Either way, they are both damn fine products that will really wake up the car.

I'm not sure what they are like now a days but the HKS filters sketch me out a little bit. Years ago I had a roommate with a GS-T Eclipse and he installed one of those HKS short rams. His turbo crapped out on him and when they looked at it thery saw that the filter had sucked up a bunch of dirt and grip and let it through. Just info for anyone looking to get this set up. I'd do a little research first on filtration.

After talkin to a buddy with the mazdaspeed intake I don't think there is really any sound difference between the two.

neither one makes the engine really any louder.

SRI gives better tuning results as the engine bay temps are largely constant any time of year. The MS6 has a hard time in cold weather and it's worse with a CAI. A lot of use are looking in to fabbing up an SRI b/c of that and there isn't one on the market that I know of.

Yah, I think its because of that mushroom style air filter. I used it on my custom short ram, and it felt like a lot more air was going through (which also meant that there was more dirt going through as well) - I dont think I'd every use that style of filter again. I love my Cobb though =).

The MS is about $325 - $350 I beleive
Cobb is $175

the MS is a very high quality system, and comes with a dryflow filter, filter cleaning chemicals, and a heat shield on the intake.

Cobb should not void your warranty, unless they can show that the engine failure was caused directly by the new intake system. You'll be pretty safe putting an intake on.

Above 30mph you get good cool air moving through the engine compartment.

imho, The power difference you get from colder air vs. the power difference from less restrictive piping is negligible in real driving situations, but not on a dyno.

Helped a friend install his MS CAI today.

(I have the Cobb SRI)

Here are my impressions...

Sound:

Cobb is a just a little bit louder. You can hear the turbo whistle a bit more, if that makes sense. The MS CAI sounds just a little muffled in comparison. But really it is close to being the same.

Performance:

I installed my Cobb SRI last week, and have already gotten use to the increase in power. I drove my friends un-modded MS3 before we installed the CAI, and it felt anemic. After the install, we drove around and did a couple freeway pulls from 40-90mph in 4th gear just to see any differences. My car pulled maybe 3/4's of a car length consistantly over the 3 times we did it. I chalked it up to the fact that my ECU has had some time to adjust to it. Overall, I after driving his car, they are pretty equal in performance.

Really there is more of a difference in sound (albeit still quite minimal) than there is in any performance feeling IMO.

What about the tinny "whooosh" sound? More or less with the SRI vs. the CAI? I could definitely do with more turbo whistle, whine, whatever, and less intake whoosh.
