Cobb Access Port Question:

So I have been reading up on the Access Port, and from what I can tell, until Cobb releases their tuning software, the reflasher will only be useful to people who have chosen to leave the car stock, or modify with only parts manufactured by Cobb. FRUSTRATING. Just wondering if I am reading too much into the whole "stock, stage 1, stage 2, etc" thing.

Thoughts?

Most parts i think would have a negligable difference between makers.

For instance I would think that the difference between a ms cai and the sri shouldn't be that big of a deal, and will work until you get a custom tune.

I would think that Cobb wouldn't be extremely aggressive with their tune, they probably have a little slack in there that can be fine tuned by each user. Because i think that other factors (elevation/temp), would have a greater affect than MS cai vs Cobb Sri.

If i'm wrong let me know, but both the Cai and Sri essentially do the same thing (more airflow?)?

When looking at exhaust there are different design issues but they all generally do the same thing at the same level. I don't think the subtle differences will be noticed on a stock map.

not an expert, but did do a lot of chip tuning on a quick little 1.8t Gti, Revo ftw!

me and my good friend had an '03 1.8t GTi with Revo 580cc BT program mated with a 3076r turbo. that car was fun.

it won't make a difference in terms of your s*** going zoom zoom boom if that's what you're worried about. the maps will work just fine with other companies parts.

still planning on late march for a release.
They posted a video of the rx-8 accessport loading on their blog, so that's pretty cool.. One more thing almost outta the way so they can focus on the ms3 a little bit more.
As for the other question, people from Cobb have said that the exhaust really doesnt matter, and that you could even just run a downpipe instead of a full turboback and be fine for stage 2, but they said they are going to have to do testing on intakes to see if theyd be compatible for stage 1+intake. The air to fuel ratios that some intakes produce are a little different than some others, so itd be best to save them. I'm not saying any other brand intakes wont work, but they arent guaranteed to.

it will work just like the subie access port it is general parts not just cobb like down pipe is any down pipe

partialy trying to sell there parts and partialy garentee issues they only tested with there parts so they can only garentee it wont blow up your car if you use there parts. i think they said the were going to test the MS CAI at a later date beacuse it had been requested by a lot of people on there forums and it was out as soon as the car was released. i dont invision them testing any other companys products beacuse that would be bad for them.

its not so much that it would be bad for them, as in lower sales - its that its not their responsibility. I used to sell TVs and its not my fault if the dvd player you bought from walmart doesn't work with my tv. I think it will work, but I haven't tested it so I can't guarantee it. It's also not my responsibility to buy one of their dvd players to see if it work, even moreso when I have a compatible one already sitting on my shelf.

make sense?

btw, check out the Cobb update thread it's on the other forum, even cobb's own forum directs people there

I think by mentioning the mazdaspeed cold air vs the cobb short ram, you stated one of the few where it would actually matter a lot. (the maf housing size difference creates different air to fuel ratios in the cylinders)

anyway, ok fine I guess you guys have renewed my faith in cobb, but I think I am going to wait for a few months to see if people have any problems with the AP and non cobb parts.

1. Cobb will most likely release a map for a turboback exhaust and then say that you can only use their short ram with the map.

2. Cobb will tune the maps very conservatively to make them safe for any MS3. Anyone that has ever run a off the shelf cobb map vs. a custom tune on a Subaru will tell you that a custom tune with the same mods will get you anywhere from 20-40 extra horsepower.

4. I am assuming that any cobb pro-tuner will also be able to custom tune a MS3-- keep in mind that you are going to pay close to $700 for the AP and then $400-$500 for a complete tune.

The money doesn't really bother me at all. I am a big fan of reflashing the ECU rather than intercepting signals.

Especially if it lets you set the throttle plate opening and closing. I really was interested in the CPE EMS, but it seems it's only good for small mods and tunes. The AP seems to be the key to getting the proper tune if you're going to be using a bigger turbo. We'll see as time will tell.

How many wheel hp and torque should we expect for stage 1?

dont know yet. They havent posted any figures.

All of the cars get a decent amount of hp from stage 1, I dont know how our car will differ from the evo's and subarus, we'll just have to wait and see until they post up some dynos or something.

I don't think that 30 hp is out of the question. you can get almost that much just from leaning out the fuel mixture.

well probably 10ish anyway.
