Clutch replacement for Miata 1.6

I was looking around for what clutch you guys reccomend for a 90 1.6 Miata. My friend has one and is getting some shop time in his auto class (Wyotech). He wants to replace his clutch and flywheel with something a little better than stock. Right now is is getting some clutch chatter and he thinks it is the clutch or flywheel.

Anyways, stock everything for now, but he will be FI at some point not too far off. He wants a lightened flywheel and a clutch that is driveable as this is a daily driver. I saw the ACT at Corksport. What else do you guys reccomend? I am just looking for stuff to compare to...

Maybe just by a stock clutch for now since everything is stock and opt for a lightened flywheel.

alot of people go with 1.8L clutches on 1.6L cars.

if he is giong to boost it then i'd look at the ACT street clutch for a 1.8L miata and a stock 1.8L flywheel.

Thanks for the replies... The ACT I think is what he is looking at. I know he does not want a stock piece. Even though he is N/A right now, he is coming to the 1.6 from a 98 M3, so he is aching for more power. There will definately be a turbo or supercharger soon...

Oh, do you know what type of modifications are needed to fit a 1.8 clutch/flywheel to a 1.6, or does it bolt right up?

From what I've read it should fit right in. Be sure to pay a visit to Miata.net I've found a lot of great info there.

I haven't heard the best things about ACT's durability. Maybe a Centerforce or Clutch Masters would last a little longer.

Cool, the first ones that we looked at were ACT, but then I showed him the Centerforce on Corksport and I think he is interested in those now... He does is own research as well, I was just coming to my fellow Mazda-ians to see if there were any opinions floating around...

the clutch masters have always been crap on miatas. ACT has always worked on miata. NO issues (if you get the Xtreme models). SPEC and soem others have been getting popular lately
