Clutch engagement problems..

Well, gonna bump this thread, I suppose. I have a Spec Stage 2 clutch. It was installed last March or so, and has been working alright for the last several months. I also replaced the flywheel (my stock one chattered like crazy) with a used 7k mile one. Unfortunately I didn't think to have it resurfaced. I've always gotten a shudder when starting from a stop, if I don't engage the clutch just right. I tried to break the thing in as best I could. Maybe the used flywheel sucks as well.

Anyhow, recently I too have noticed my clutch engages at a very high point. Can anyone give a decent procedure on adjusting the clutch pedal? I guess I'll try to bleed the line and adjust the pedal and see if that works, but the manual is pretty confusing to me on what to do. I see one thing adjusts free play, and the other the height or something, but I don't understand the importance/use of each. Help would be very much appreciated!

Most likely not the pedal. Probably bout time for a new clutch disc, and resurface of the flywheel. Stock flywheel?

Yeah, I'd still like to try adjusting it though. I don't have any other signs of a worn clutch. Hell, I'm pretty much a completely stock MP3 except for I/H/E. It was a stock flywheel off a MSP with about 7k miles on it. Key point being that I didn't have it resurfaced :(.

I wonder if the How-To for Mazda 6's here is pretty much the same procedure. They have very high engagement points by default, and someone wrote up a pretty decent how-to. Parts look pretty identical.

This weekend I am putting my old Fidanza flywheel back in with a new Exedy Stage I clutch. My car has been down for a few weeks due to my rear oil seal leaking, my starter going out (probably due to the oil that go in it), and me waiting on money to buy a new clutch + new friction surface for my Fidanza. I must say this Exedy has stood up well for over 3 years:

I think someone at Fidanza messed up. My new friction surface's screw holes don't line up at all with the screw holes on the flywheel. The part number for the package was correct, but it looks as if someone put the wrong friction surface in the bag at the factory!! This really puts a dampener on my plans...:

Old friction surface lines up perfectly:

Old friction surface transposed on top of new friction surface. Holes don't line up:

once you get the right s*** in, make sure you send the crapdanza off to a machine shop to get cleaned and balanced... you'll be amazed ;)

All the new bearings (pilot, and throw-out) are included with the clutch, as well as greese.

After talking to Fidanza, I know now why the friction surface doesn't match. My flywheel is of an older 20-bolt design, while the new friction surface is made for an 18-bolt design. Fidanza is great about correcting this issue, and will be shipping me the correct friction surface.

Ok, so I just put on the new friction surface, and I am ready to put my ******* car back together. Here are some pitures:

New friction surface installed:

It was a pain in the ass to make sure all fasteners were flush, and that the heads of the screws were below the friction surface. All torqued to 5 FT/LBS, or 60 IN/LBS in this case:

Here is the correct part number for a new friction surface for the old-style 20-bolt Fidanza Flywheels for our cars:

I had to go to Elliot's Hardware on Saturday to get new bolts for the clutch cover/pressure plate, as the stock ones were stripped.

I was amazed at getting this done at 5 A.M. Sunday morning, with only help from the wife to guide the jack I used to lift the tranny into place. Went to Sears and got a new battery. I will have a Braille racing battery and cage up for sale soon.

Driving around yesterday, I forgot how much I missed boost! Drove out to help Richard (Apocman) put his engine back in his shell of a MSP. So I was basically under 2 cars this weekend, and I hurt!! Thanks Edwin (TheMan) for the helpful tips, and JDM Sam for the help in acquiring parts that were needed, along with tips!
