Clutch Chatter

Sometimes I even hear my rear license plate rattle. (dunno)

Oh, and my front bumper rattles. I think that is because I hit a snow bank a while back and some of the supports are broken. I'll have to check.

I have the same problem. Feels more like a ripped motor mount than a warped flywheel though. The best way I can describe it is "excessive travel in the gear box, when giving and letting go of the throttle at low speeds." My shifter moves fore and aft about 1inch and a half throughout the whole shift range. Bucks like crazy in 1st gear, when slowing down and accelerating without clutching in. The only way to aleviate the issue is to clutch in and ride/slip the clutch if transitioning between acceleration and deceleration.

Alright, put the flamethrowers away. I read here where the long reach plugs helped somewhat on initial rolloff in first gear. Of course I know this isn't the cure for an ailing clutch or motormounts but I do believe with what has been said in various threads here that 1, a healthy clutch 2, good motor mounts are essential & lastly the long reach plugs as a package are the way to eliminate this problem. I don't have a clutch in THIS car but do in many others I've had in the past 30 years.

I've learned to deal with it. Whenever the cars been sitting over night and the components are cold, I just start in second gear. Problem fixed! Once everything is warmed up, I start in first.

I've got a strange sound coming out of mine...comes under the hood...and it's the rusty heat deflector on the headers that shakes randomly in 1st and 2nd gear...was shaking in 3rd but ive pry it and put a metal wire to prevent some rubbing "i don't know where" but...im thinking of removing it totally (3 bolts and voila!) ...so rusty!

...but...im thinking of removing it totally (3 bolts and voila!) ...so rusty!

Heh, that's what I though...3 bolts and voila!

It took me 1 hour due to the rust...had to cut two of them out...fortunately for me, I already had the header in my garage...installed it, then went to work on the Exhaust Manifold.

I was only able to get the two end bolts out. The other ones I got my mechanic to melt off.

Yea. i think i warped my flywheel..... i installed awr mounts, new motor, ZOOM brand stage II clutch and a lightened flywheel. When i take off from first, sometimes i get a strange metal to metal sound going on. It is either my rear mount is shiot or the flywheel is warped.

I also have some clutch chatter. However, I only notice mine after driving for a while on the highway. Any long trips I go on, after coming into a city or a gas station, taking off in first feels like an earthquake. It doesn;t happen when cold, just after highway trips. ANyone encounter that?

Yeah, when things under the hood get hotter, I experience close to the same thing.

its the clutch and flywheel. i have the same problem with new motor mounts "didn't fix the problem" but new motor mount feels great. im saving money now for clutch/flywheel.

P5inder, i got the heat shield offin 5 min ...2 bolts were easy to remove and the other was so rusty around that the shield comes off by itself when i removed the 2 other bolts.

but that was not the noisemaker...its the catalytic converter that is rusted inside or something is loose i dont know. ill change it someday; its not something VITAL :P

I also removed the heat-shield on the catalytic converter. That was another source of noise.

Engine Hot, Same Problem

Yeah, when things under the hood get hotter, I experience close to the same thing.

I have exactly the same problem when the engine is hot, at first I thought it was me, getting old and uncoordinated or to many drugs when I was young, but I'm glad its happening to others as well. (boom04)

Do you have aftermarket engine mounts?

Mine actually improved over time. I was pretty bad when the mounts were super stiff. Now that they broke in and got softer, the chatter is nearly nonexistent.

However, I've been slipping the clutch a bit more from a stop to ensure a nice takeoff with the stiffer mounts.

All in all, I think my clutch worked itself in with accordance to the new set up. And though it may not be perfect, it's very drivable.

No I don't have aftermarket engine mounts. I have a 2002, a lot of posts point to the problem that I will need a new clutch to remedy this problem.

Getting Closer?

Here is the quote for the replacement of a clutch in a 2002 Mazda Protege 5 from the Mazda dealer using Mazda parts.

mazda original parts $360.00
machine flywheel $125.00

The Mazda dealer will install after market which is cheaper ($242.10/ea), so is this what I need to order for him to complete the job:

http://www.nipponpower.com/product....html?p=368&skip=1>Check+other+make/model</a>)

I've done a lot of reading and to my understanding the Spec clutch would be the better way to go, but at the same time, I'm not a mechanic, so I'm afraid I will order the wrong parts for the job and end up paying twice as much.

I actually think that this problem stems from engine mount that are too soft. People do not need to slip the clutch at all to get going (as was the case with me), and I don't think it's a good way to wear a clutch. A clutch is made to be slipped (in moderation, of course).

So I think this develops weird wear patterns, but I might be wrong.

I'm just saying that having driven a car with stiffer mounts, I've been slipping the clutch to about 1500 rpm to get going. And I think that's the way cars need to be driven.

When I had the soft mounts, I would just let the pedal out, the mounts would flex, and the car would get going...
