clunking sound after I shift

When I installed my TRZ RMM last week i made sure that everything was tight. However after around 5-700 miles I started to hear a clunking everytime I shifted. Checked it out and sure enough one of the bolts had become just loose enough to cause that. It wasnt loose to the point where you could see it backing out or turn it by hand, but that was my problem. Tightened up and everything is fine.

I would just check the bolt going through the bushing on the mount, that was the one causing my issue.

I had the same problem with my brand new, two-week old sp3. Dealer tech said it's definitely not normal. They have the car for repairs. The dealer I bought the car from is one of the few real MazdaSpeed dealers in the country. They should know what's normal or not.

please enlighten us about the "few real mazdaspeed dealers"

word, i was just about to type this. though it looks like this was a thread that is a few weeks old. nonetheless, if you hear a clunk when letting go of the clutch, take off your battery box, and make sure that bolt that holds the mount to the tranny is tight. about 80 ft lbs of tq

I have checked both mounts and both were tight. I will check my TRZ mount again to be on the safe side but the noise is still theres and i can even hear it now when going over uneven roads. I swear it sounds like a heat shield clunk/rattle but I couldnt find anyting loose. Its annoying when driving wth the radio off casue thats all i concentrate on hearing for.

Not every Mazda dealer has staff trained and certified by Mazdaspeed to sell/install/service their stuff. There are only a few certified Mazdaspeed dealers in the country. I can find out the number if you like.

Took my two week old '09 to the dealer when I noticed the clunk. Took the tech with me when he could not duplicate the problem. Got going 20-30 mph and then bumped the shifter around in the center of the pattern without engaging any gear. Clunk! Tech said it didn't sound right and they kept the car. After a few days he reported back. He said that according to Mazdaspeed there is a mechanical blocker in the trans to keep you from downshifting at a speed that would over-rev the engine. That can cause a clunk during normal driving. THe tech said he drove all 5 of the new ms3's they had in stock, one '09 and four '10's and he was able to make all of them clunk I don't know enough about these cars yet to be able to tell if he's bs'ing me or not, but everything works fine so I'm not going to worry about it any more. The car is under warranty. If the trans goes I get a new one.

If that's the case then coming off a freeway off-ramp and wanting to downshift from 6th into 4th (normally OK) but missing fourth and trying to push it into 2nd (not OK) would clunk.... Anyone want to try this and report back on "clunking"....... Seems to be easy enough to test, not that I'd want to stress my tranny..... Go to a dealership and give it a try with a new one on the lot.... The same ones that were tested by the dealer mentioned above prefererably.

I still think that this car needs perfect rev matching to not clunk and otherwise is very clunk prone due to shift shock. I have given up on caring about the noise.

I started hearing clunking last winter, especially when it gets bellow 40fahrenheit, its really annoying and like everyone else, I heard it in first couple gears, also sometimes when coming to a stop, its freaking annoying but oh well. Also I think my sensors on the downpipe are affected by ambient temp changes since I keep getting a cel when its cold out, then a few days later it goes away, wtf???? can anyone explain that for me?? It must be the temp changes, maybe some moisture buildup, I give up.....

I also started hearing a clunk after shifting in the last few months, chalked it up to the shenanigans of the transmission. Also had a slight crunch sound when first driving off after starting the car in the morning (not related to shifting), again thought it was normal. And last week, there was a huge clunk! and crunch! while driving on the freeway, the pin in the differential broke and shot through the housing, and that also took out the clutch.

So was the initial clunk while shifting related to what happened? And the crunch too? Maybe not. But maybe so. Think I'll double-check all the mounts while the car is being fixed...

I read there is a recall for a bolt that comes loose on an engine mount. That could be it.

I just had the recalled bolt and mount done for the second time. I am picking it up tomorrow. I was told that it just needed "re-torquing" and that my CAI was hitting the chassis after the initial fail. I was hoping they would have caught that sort of issue from the get go. Especially since it was a dealer installed CAI.(scratch)
