cleaned my engine

So I cleaned my engine the other day for the first time since I purchased it. I used Simple Green. Warm up the engine a bit, spray it on, wash it off with garden hose. Took some before and after photos. Question - I noticed the valve cover had some dirted that seemed kind of "pitted" in. I coudn't get it completely clean even after brushing it. Is it possible to get the VC really clean?

looks good. you shouldn't warm your engine up too much though. hot metal + cold water = bad

Thanks. Yeah I only let it warm up a couple of minutes. Just enough to maybe loosen up some stuff, but definitely cool enough to touch.

good good. as for your valve cover, try doing a search. a lot of people have sanded and polished/powdercoated/painted their covers to fix that.

Yeah my valve cover is even worse than that. I'm hopefully getting it powder coated very soon to alleviate the problem.

That's a big difference!

I attended my first meet about a month ago. I took great care to clean the rest of the car, but when I popped the hood to compare my stock engine to raidermp5's lightly modded (and clean) engine, I was very embarrassed.

I clean mine the same way, simple green, let it sit a while, then wipe it off...
as an added bonus/protection, I spray my tire shine stuff on it (STP brand I think) and it really shines it up and lasts for a fricken long time.

as an example, I had TurfBurn help me do my tranny flush last month at his place.
I popped the hood and he asked me what year it was, told him 2002
he was like, damn, that looks clean for being that old!

Oooo very clean! Did you cover up any of the wires and crap before you sprayed the engine bay?

Nothing, but keep in mind my engine is still stock. If you have a sri you need to cover the filter with a bag. I wouldn't suggest using a pressure washer just normal pressure from the hose. I have a nozzle attachment that has different settings (mist, shower, stream, full, etc...) and I just used shower. After rinsing I did towel off around the plugs (don't want water getting down there) and some of the hoses. Next time I wash my engine I may get one of those filter attachments for the water - I have lots of water spots on hoses and whatnot.

I'll vouch for those Mr. Clean AutoDry that you see in damn near every store nowadays. I haven't hand dried my car since I got the thing. It dries spot free every time for me!

you should paint it now that its degreased and clean. i love my painted v/c. gloss black, classy.

Funny, I was just searching through some old threads of folks that have painted theirs with the wrinkle paint. I kinda like the red wrinkle with polished letter look. Plus the flat black manifold cover is nicer than I thought it would be. Hmmm...

paint it black man!

Hey RSP5, where you been? In my mind the wrinkle black with polished letters looks good. Not big on the glossy look for some reason, no offense.

Thanks Rick. I'll keep you posted about meets when I hear of them.

There is a statewide Mazda meet next weekend in Daytona Beach! Check out the FL section, or pm me for details.
