change Dash lights color

k, thanks for that. the blue gauges in those pics are a little too vibrant and intense for my personal taste, but the blue/white information displays are pretty sweet

i prefer the information displays in the 3 and the 6. Unlike ours where green lights the back and the information is displayed in black. The back is black and the information is displayed in amber/red. I wonder how hard it would be to swap those parts out on a 5???

In that last picture of the blue dashlights, did anyone else notice the trip computer readout on the center display?(uhm)

i did it to my show truck with lights from advanced auto parts. they were individule l.e.d.'s for under the car but all i did was spread them out. it was cool because it glowed out of the a/c vents too. very cheap mod that adds a nice custom touch.

The environmental controls' lights are bulbs (I think some of the radio is too), I got my hands on some blue sleeves for them, but they came out less blue than I would have liked. I'll probably switch them back since I don't plan on switching the LEDs.
Also, the light for the gear s*** is a bulb, but the light under the driver's window control is and LED.

Happy hacking!

With changing the radio/environmental read-out color, are they just LEDs?
Another question... how do you get into the gauge cluster? how do you pop off the plastic shrowd overtop the cluser? the led replacement would be tedious... but a step up from green.

I replaced all my bulbs in my old 94 grand am gauge pod with 10mm blue leds, looked nice, but had hotspots because the LEDS had narrow beams.

Guess this mod would void any remaining warrenty I had left on my 3year.

With the bulbs in the environmental unit, and the shift controls, cant you just find aftermarket blue bulbs? or are they something specific?

if you are wondering about the information: it says "10,8 ltr per 100km", which means it needs around 4 gallons for 60mls, which at the end is 15mpg.

There's a very detailed walkthrough of how to do this on the 3 on Mazda 3 forums.com...... sadly this forum won't let me post a link to it. It does involve desoldering each LED and adding new ones, also for some parts of it you have to remove a colored film on the back of the gauges... not sure if you hwave to do that on the 5 as well.

Here's a couple of pictures from that thread.

Looks freaking wicked. But I don't have the skills or the time to do it. Makes me sad. Labor for this kind of thing has got to be priceyyy too.

(silly)

(2cents) that is a lot just for dash lights, but then again, to each his own. :)

Peace!(rei)

Heres a thought, if you dont like the color, try posibly changing th e needle color which may illuminate your gauge faces. Ihad custom faces made for my car. I also ordered a needle lighting kit. I got all that from www.importintelligence.com. Hope that helps, just giving you another angle to look at.

get the dimensions of the LED and cross reference on digikey, jameco, or newark. Order, desolder, resolder, done. No? Surface mount soldering isn't that hard, just put the tip of an exacto blade under it to put slight pressure upward. Hit one side with the iron, it'll pop up then hit the other side and remove. Make sure you note polarity of the old and slap on the new.
