All I see with this setup is HYDROLOCK!!! That is of course coming from Miami, Fl

and hydro lock is something i will never need to worry about here in so cal.

and i never drive my baby in the rain (when it does rain here about 10 days a year). i carpool with the wifey !

sweet... nice setup though... I was raised in L.A. trying to get back there...

you should kid, lots more opportunity out here.

can't beat the weather, although i do love humid weather for some odd reason.

You are one sick bastard :)

Like the install a lot! +1 for DIY

Um .............this is a very nice install, and a SERIOUS A+ for effort and execution............... BUT.........I don't think you gained anything in power, infact unless you got some dyno number to prove otherwise you may have loss some power.

A double pass IC is great for cooling but the problem is the pressure drop is such a crazy amount that you might loose boost due to the effectiveness of the IC.

Now in order to maintain 15 psi the turbo has to work harder making more hot air (the turbo might haver to push 3-5 psi more pressure to see 15 on the manifold), the IC can cool it down but another problem is when you overwork the turbo it also slows down the exhaust side limiting HP.

the factory IC has great flow characteristics for a STOCK IC. the improvements made with other TMIC's is because they are able to reduce pressure drop and thus work the turbo easier. there will always be pressure drop, its the cost of cooling the aircharge. you just have to find a good balance between flow and cooling to maximize HP.

Like i said before its good looking and VERY nicely put together, but i doubt you helped performance, infact i'm willing to bet that you may lost some.

I agree that TMIC are not the Ideal place to have an IC , BUT Mazda did do their homework and the airflow across the IC is pretty damn good at cruisin speed. in stop and go traffic is sucks ass, but it doesn't take much to cool things off.

excellent post ...

i wasn't trying to gain performance as of RIGHT NOW. i was trying to prepare myself for a big turbo setup once full tuning capabilities comes forth. So, instead of dropping everything all at once, i thought, i would piece everything together over the next couple of months, so when the big turbo setup does arrive, i am very well prepared.

my next mod will be a full custom exhaust built by me, rich, and justin !!!

then hopefully the tuning software will be here, and i can go big turbo !!!

thanks again for your informative post ... and i would love to hear more suggestions and comment !

My experience comes from working on my SVO. My best numbers with a simliar IC that you have was 322whp and 346 wtrq on 26psi of boost and 31* of total timing.

later i changed JUST the IC to a procharger style IC (pic below) and ran the dyno again.
New numbers were 324whp and 379 Ftlbs WTRQ........... 24psi and 27* total timing. I felt alot better about turning down the timing a little and being able to make more trq with less boost.

Its all about FLOW......... a equal length exhaust header will flow better than a stock manifold, a bigger turbo will flow beter than the stocker, a big IC will flow more than a stocker............but there are trade offs the header might crack easier, bigger turbo means more lag, bigg IC might have restrictions for installation...........

Like i said earlier, AWESOME WORK, hell i need that kind of piping for the SVO, it just might not have gained anything for you.

If you have big plans for youer MS3 then pick up a Corky bell book, i'm not smart, i'm just able to understand and regergitate what this book is talking about and apply the info accordingly.

Hell i gained 32whp by just changing the exhaust housing on my turbo for the SVO. went from 243whp to 275whp trq dropped a bit, but then again i got rid of my bad boost spikes........

My svo has ALOT of dyno time (recommend using the same dyno every time for mods) Hell we did 23 pulls one day trying to tune the pig out. I wasted 8 gallons of racegas on the dyno lol. (wasted meaning... PIG PIG RICH)

But if you have specific questions i'l help out. I actually posted a LONG thread in the protege section for someguys that were wanting IC setups. Heres the IC thread

Hey would you mind sharing the core size that your using? Well that and what pipe diamaters are employed? Your set-up looks great and I see where your coming from with the big turbo waiting for a good tune. I have similar capabilities so I am interested in your progress.

sure bud...

Core Size: 22" X 8" X 3.5"
Overall Size: 29" x 8" x 3.5"

Pipe Diameters:
Custom CAI = 3" including 3" MAF Housing
Cold Side Pipe = 2.5"
Hot Side Pipe = 2.5"

your not having any probelms with the 3" MAF housing? Like MAF reading wrong signal?

nope ... took the ECU a couple days to fully adjust, but i'm running good now (drinks)

did the increased piping lenghts decrease throttle response? one of my buddies has a wrx and got rid of his fmic for this reason.

not really. i was thinking it definately would, but it flows great, with not much lag if any. even with the CAI that i made, i thought throttle response would go down the tubes, but its great !!!

Sweet!!! Make it a kit, keep the price low and it will sell like porn in a prison.

AGREED. Put me down for one now.. Heatsoak is killing me even with the ETS. I hope/trust this eliminates that.... at least more than what we are dealing with now.
