Awhile ago i got a catless fabbed up for my car, we put it in and it has been pretty good. The only thing that always freaks me out is how often it backfires. It usually does right when i am shifting gears, but not neccessarily high rev, or hard shifts. Its more often in mid throttle slower shifts. More recently it seems as if the loud bangs are coming more from below my feet and less through the end of the exhaust....could it be an exhaust leak? It also makes little putter sounds while at idle, almost sounds like mini backfires, at random intervals. iT also sometimes shudders while in idle, especially on warmer days. I dont want to go right to the dealer, cause i dont know if theyll give me s*** for my mods, and i also dont know which ones are cool around here yet. Somebody tell me everything will be ok..........:'(

I had my exhaust off from the cats for a while and it did the same thing. It's just backfiring from the overly rich condition. I don't think it's going to hurt anything.

it backfires alot, more than 50% maybe
is the exhaust leak a possible expl.
what kind of problems could i have that would cause excessive backfiring?

in high performance cars when they run overly rich, backfiring is normal. The MSP definitely runs rich. If you pay close attention to some racing videos you will see cars backfiring entering and exiting the corners because when they let off of the gas it sends the extra fuel from running rich or just lots of fuel through the hot exhaust which causes it to ignite and backfire.

anythoughts on the weird puttering sound i hear at idle
it almost sounds like tiny backfires like this
"idle idle idle PUTT idle idle idle idle PUTT idle PUTT"
i know its a highly technical description and all but try and work with me:)

I agree with the above statments. It happens all the time you just dont hear it when you are stock because of your muffler, resenators, and cats. I wouldnt worry about it

Oh ok, I see what your'e getting at. I was thinking he was wondering if stock MSP's were backfiring. :D

I've got to get off the meds. (stoned)

my car backfires with a 3in cat. it is normal because of the overly richness of the car. it is pretty damn cool when you drive by and then "pop" and someones car alarm goes off!!!!

its not doing anything bad to the car, it just the gas combusting in the exhaust pipe.

cool
thanks
i kept telling myself it was seemed normal, but i wanted to put it out there incase there was something i wasnt thinking of.

i think the meds make me overly paranoid about sounds i hear from the car..........:D (stoned)

Like they said, only whats happening isnt technically a backfire. The reason it is popping is cuz when you are at WOT, your injectors are spraying like crazy---when you let off the gas to shift, some of that fuel is not burned up and as it travels thru the exhaust, it hits a hot enough part in the pipe to ignite the fuel in the I-pipe, hence the pop. It isnt bad for your car though.
