Can't find proper steel wheel for Kuhmo T165/90R17 T121 tire

Befrore heading out on a North Rim of the Grand Canyon trip in a couple of weeks with my wife, I decided to replace the wimpy spare that came with my '19 GT-R. I want this Kuhmo tire based on the long thread here about suggested spares. So all the popular on-line dealers have the tire, but the recommended rim, the 17x5.5 steel, I cannot find anywhere. I find it amazing that Discount Tire, Simple Tire or Tire Rack don't even suggest a rim. All the 17" rims that I find are 7" wide. The Dealers all say that the tire should use a 4" wide rim, but the Kuhmo site says 4" to 5.5".

Any ideas?

Thanks!

It is a Mazda wheel and is hub centric, correct bore. Works fine, seems wide for the tire but fits, and in the trunk after removing some foam.

You can also get an 18" wheel and tire combo. I won several ebay bids for inexpensive 17" mazda spare wheels, but each time they sent me an 18" wheel, they were confused. I should have bought the wheel first and then the tire.

I have no qualms using an old wheel, but wanted a new tire.

I received the wheel and tire this week and had Discount Tire mount it for me yesterday. The check-in guy looked up the tire and wheel and questioned the match based on what his computer told him. It went up to the manager who looked at another chart confirmed that it was OK.

I did the exchange this morning. I only left about 1/4" of each of the 5 foam pads on the hard cover and everything fit perfectly. I did elongate the center bolt with a M8 rod and coupling nut. I need to have a coworker trim about 1/2" off of the rod at our shop in the next few days, but otherwise ready to go. Of course, after I put everything back together, I didn't think to remove the cover again for the "installed pic". It's amazing how much bigger the 165/90R17 is than the stock spare. I feel much better about heading to the North Rim.

Anybody have any idea what the original unused spare is worth on Craigslist? $50?

It’s nice to have a correct-sized spare in the trunk to get on a road trip. I got a Dunlop Space Miser MKIII T155/90D18 103M tire with 18X4 steel wheel on a 2015 Mazda CX-9 from LKQ several months back replacing the factory one which is too small. I wish we can get 185/70R17 regular tire in the US which is used as the spare for CX-5 in Mexico, as although the Kumho T121 T165/90R17 is wider, it’s still rated as a temporary compact spare tire with much inferior maximum speed limit (55 mph?) and driving distance.

I believe in that long thread some mentioned he sold factory Yokohama Y870B T145/90D16 106M compact spare to some Hyundai owner, but I haven’t tried.

Went back out today to install some of the cut-off foam around the subwoofer and under the too-long bolt until I get the bolt cut shorter. I snapped a pic this time. It would be nice to be able to get the 185/70R17 regular driving tire that yrwei52 refers to above. There is definitely room for it.

Just realized now Mazda states that 2020 models ship with “17 spare
Nice find!

New 17” temporary spare, T155/90D17 101M on 2020 CX-5 GT-R and Sig. has 28.3” outside diameter. Although it’s still not a size with correct outside diameter of 28.7”, but it fits CX-5 GT-R and Sig. at 4 corners which have bigger dual-piston front brake calipers whereas the previous T145/90D16 106M is too small to fit at front. Now we can use new 17” spare at front temporarily if it’s ever needed. I guess Mazda North American Operations saw the complaints here and decided to make the change. ;)

I wonder how much a new one would cost
List price for OEM 17X5.5 steel wheel is $145.57, Kumho T155/90D17 101M temporary spare tire is $98.85 at Tire Rack.

Notice that you need 17X5 steel wheel for T155/90D17 tire.

Actually, 155/90D17 outside diameter is 27.98" which is 0.7" smaller than your regular tire. You would be better off with 165/90R17 which at 29.1" diameter, is only 0.4" larger than your regular tire. 165/90R17 is spare size on old CX-7 and Hyundai Santa Fe/Kia Sorrento. If you plan to buy a new spare rim, consider buying the 165/90R17 tire. It's $78 at Discount Tire.

I’d prefer to get the one we’re supposed to get from Mazda for my 2016 CX-5 AWD, but never did get it, the T155/90 D18! The same size spare were used on CX-7 AWD and 1st-gen CX-9 AWD. And I got one from a 2015 CX-9 AWD which has newer date code than mine like I mentioned in post #5.

That is strange. If you go to the Mazda USA website today and look at 2016 specs, it shows this 18" spare for Sport, Touring, and GT if they are AWD.

Here is spec for the Sport
Wheel size (in) 17 x 7 aluminum alloy
Tire size P225/65 R17 all season tires
Temporary spare tire T145/90 D16 (FWD) / T155/90 D18(AWD)

I just picked up a Fuzion 205/50 17 on what looks like a Mazda 3, 5, or cx7 rim for $60.

I can tell the tire is a bit small but it's probably better than the steel donut. I will probably replace the rubber with a take off when I get a new set.

I picked up a staple in a rear tire and discovered the TPMS really works.

Your 205/50 17 has a 25" diameter which is 1.3" smaller than the donut! Also, the 205mm width may make it hard to close the cover with wheel in the spare tire well. IMO, you're better off with the donut.

I haven't tried to put it in the trunk. It's in the garage. I thought it was a good deal for a 17" wheel but the tire is almost worthless, although it seems to hold air. When I get around to a new set of tires, I might put one of them on the wheel.
