Canadian cost advice, please

Hello all,

I am looking to purchase a new 2003 Mazda Protege 5 with sport auto and ac. MSRP is 24, 605 including freight and gst, and also includes the 600 grad discount (mazda.ca) The two dealers in the Edmonton area that I have initially spoken with have been quite firm on their discounts of ~650 and ~800, respectively. I am thinking that I should be able to do a little better, given that it is now September and the new models will be out in a few months. I have heard invoice on these cars in Canada is about 1600 from MSRP. Could any Canadians out there give me some good advice?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

damn, 24,605. i know thats in canadian money but, damn. what is that like 18,000 or 19,000 american.

sorry i can't help that price just dumbfoundedme.
you need to come to Tennessee, they sell here for 12,600.

Hello, fellow Edmontonian! If you want local info, chat, etc, check out www.edmontonprotegeclub.com. We're a great group of people, and everyone knows at least something about something.

Out of curiousity, which dealerships have you checked out? It's a general consensus that Jarman Mazda (which happens to be our major local sponsor) is the best one to deal with, though I haven't yet checked out the new dealership in Sherwood Park. I had a great experience with them. See if you can talk to Brant or Sean.

I also have an auto (wishing I'd gone with my gut and got stick) with a/c, but I also got the moonroof, though mine is an '02. I didn't get any discounts when I bought mine, but it was just under $25 without the gst (also included the rear bumper guard and the moonroof wind deflector). So unless the base price has gone up a little with the '03 (which I don't think it has), the price you've been quoted WITH the discount sounds a little high. For invoice price on cars, check out www.carcostcanada.com .

Feel free to pm or email me if you have any further questions. Good luck! :)

Jarman actually quoted me an out the door price of 25 565 after grad discount, dealer discount (~800), taxes, etc. for a 2003 midnight blue, auto, ac, and moonroof model. Somehow, I think this actually ended up higher than the what the mazda.ca website listed, but I have not yet checked the math. Jarman is now a "one-price", no-haggle dealer, so I am not sure if they will budge on the price. Either way, there are 4 or 5 dealers in the area, so I will shop around.

Hi Deano

Maybe you can make a few of our meetings when you get your car. As Andrea says we're a great group of people, well most of them anyway :p

By the way, you probably know that the Auto transmission is an extra $1000 at least that is what it was when we got P5 last year. We were going to get a standard anyway so it did not matter. The AC is also a $1000 but that is a good investment we thought.

I think you will find that the price between the dealers will not be very different but what makes it for me is the service and support after. We got ours from Auto World but now I get all of my stuff done at Jarman. Plus they are our club sponsor :)

i see allot of canuk based porncites on the web nowadays, if you run one, i can get you a great deal on any mazda if you get me a cameo spot on your cite

in vancouver, i just bought my 2003.5 p5 for $19370 plus $5500 trade-in plus tax..... ends up being $22K+

plus i got free leather. then again, i know the owner of the dealership... :D

Well I paid $23,300 before taxes etc for my 2003 P5 - auto , moonroof. The dealership here did not budge on the price except for a few administrative cost deductions. Now add the 14.5% tax! Damn Canadian Gov't!

Skyhawk174, did you get a good deal at Autoworld? i was thinking about heading down there this weekend?

I thought so but the new car manager I dealt with is no longer there. I went there knowing all of my numbers for different options so I was prepared.

Autoworld is a bit different as most of their sales are used cars and leases. At the time I bought there was only one new car guy so none of this "I have to go see my manager" crap. The buck stopped there.

However I do all my stuff now with Jarman as it is closer.

I tried Sundance but they did not know what they were talking about.

or the fact that it's now closer the when the mazda3 is going to be introduced.....

Well, in Mississauga, Ontario. I got it for a bit less then 26,000 after tax.

Btw, anyone here from Mississauga or Toronto?

end of the year.. inventory clear outs.. new model.. price drop now...

i'm in vancouver.

i did the carcost canada thing... the dealer invoice cost for a 2003 midnight blue with auto/moonroof/air (has the sportshift thang)
came to 22,842. before taxes.. including freight and air tax

after the dang CDN gov taxes and the dealer (admin fee - 125) it came to 27 524 (1801 - gst, 1681 - pst)

i should have shopped around... prolly could have gotten better than the 800 mark up. but couldn't be bothered with the hassle of finding a new dealer etc.. etc.

hope that helps

ps: a carcost canada thing. if you go that route. get their dealer quote.. then go and find other dealers in the area to beat it. if you can and want to. me-i couldn't be bothered.

thats probably..... the only thing we had to discuss was how much my 02 premium rsxs cost for trade in..

Hmmm, well I paid CAN$23,035 for my P5 with Auto and Air.
Plus I got a $7,000 before taxes trade (i.e. $8,000 reduction on total cost of car) for a Ford Contour that was only Black Booked at $5,200 - $6,200.

Total cost after all taxes, hidden fees, trades, etc was $19,736. Plus I got 3.9% financing which was better than the 7% or 8% the bank wanted.

I guess I did alright. This was in March.
