can BSM be added later?

A few people have suggested that the wiring harness and supporting smarts aren't in the vehicle to support adding in "missing" options.

In general, port installed accessories can be installed by customers post-purchase.
Otherwise, even if it is possible, it will cost a lot to do it.

Any aftermarket version probably can be installed but with a significant $$$ outlay.

Bsm is kind of useless in a cx5 ime. Just...look. it's not like visibility is bad. That rant out of the way, yeah, anything is possible, but it would be cheaper to trade it in I'd bet.

I completely disagree. BSM has saved me a couple of times from someone changing lanes or zooming up on me after I put on my blinker.

I agree, if it were useless it wouldn't be popping up lower tier cars.

People get in accidents, it happens. Adding BSM is no different then when mirrors were added - it is all designed to reduce accidents and add a layer of safety.

+1. Saved my bacon quite a few times. Really good to have in heavy traffic, especially with noisy kids in the back.

Honestly saved me a couple of times when I was working a particular job a few years ago and due to hours, etc. really should not have been driving due to sleep deprivation.

Never "saved me" but does make me a better driver. I know when (drive2) it's safe to pass you.

BSM is helpful for sure but the cost to add it retoactively isn't worth it. Instead, opt for one of those mirror add-ons like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/ (commissions earned)

even with blind spot monitoring, i still look to make sure so i don't actually find it all that useful. what i find way more useful is the rear cross traffic alert which is tied to the BSM system

On my 2008 CX9, the BSM costed $200 as an option.
That was the best $200 I ever spent on any accessory or option in a vehicle.

Thank you all!

I might call a dealer just to check, but sounds like Touring is probably called for to get BSM. I disagree that the CX-5 has good visibility,...compared to other types of vehicles with more glass. Wish they had made the pillars narrower.

they did in the second gen CX5, but even in the first gen I thought the visibility was great. At that point I had only test driven a 2014 CRV and a 2016 Rav4 but both of those cars had less visibility--at least for me

KF CX-5 has the pillars slightly further back improving visability

Sat in an 18 today. Rear visibility is slightly better. Didn't expect that.

Out the rear. Not sure if they have different head rests or if the window somehow has more volume but the view was definitely better.

Here's a comparison - window of KF seems a bit smaller but the tailgate seems to come out more:
