Cam Question

Hey, does anyone on this board who owns a Mazdaspeed have the Mazdaspeed intake and/or exhaust cam in their car. I have seen dyno sheets that state that the intake cam can make 12hp at the wheels.

Does this sound like a good install and power gain. The cams only cost $130, maybe the best bang for your buck.

The Mazdaspeed Cams dyno sheet is for NA cars. Dunno if there is that large of a gain from putting it ina boosted car. I would think not, as skunk2 cams, which are designed for NA B series motors, dont work well in a boosted car (my buddy tried it and actually lost power)

I'm not certain what kinda profiles the NA cams have...but I suspect they won't be as aggressive as the Skunk2 cams....

case in point...the Integra-R cams were meant for NA app. only but have proven to work well in boosted situations. With camgears you can dial out the overlap and take advantage of the lift....

I wonder how all of this will go with the "Big Brother" ECU.....

very good point, you make about the camgears and overlap for boost. some others have not really taken this into account.
as far as the ecu is concerned, if and i say if you can get adjustables the ecu will be fine once timed properly.

They do make cam gears for our cars, tri-Point engineering has them. I have both cams in my turbo p5. I couldn't tell you whether or not I lost power since they we're on before the turbo was put on. They did make a very noticable difference NA, I still notice them when I'm on it. It pulls strong around 5k rpm's. It's like a second bit of boost right after the turbo.

well, there is a discussion about the relation of blown engines, turbo and the cams. they advance the timing, and as you all know, advance timing is not necessarily good for turbo. BUT someone needs to prove this theory wrong. i want the cams.

WHAT? so u dont LOVE your MAZDASPEED anymore? noo! how could you.

well i am instred in sum cams for the MSP $130 sounds damn good

I was wrong, the cams are 189 bucks each (corksport). Still waiting from a reply from Mazda, will post it when I get it.

some one needs to EXPLAIN to me how this mild cam upgrade is afecting IGNITION TIMING or are you talking about CAM TIMING?

Good question. The cams will open and close the valves sooner, how do you effect ignition timing with this mod? And I'm not talking about playing with the distrubitor.

there isnt a distributor!;)

My bad, still use to the "Old School." Ok, in that case, how do you effect the ignition timing at all with a cam upgrade?

the cam sensor is one that inputs to the ecu that will control ESA (electronic spark advance ).
it is one of many sensors that are used as a refernce only. if the cam is installed properly there should not be any problems at all. if it is not and the stock gear is installed "one tooth off" then fuel delivery will suffer and then detenation CAN occur. the cam sensor is used to refernce the pulsing of the injectors .

oh sorry, wasn't paying attn to the thread... yeah i'm talking about cam timing. check the performance forum for the discussion about boosted cars and the cams. and ask linuxracr about it. i think 3 people with the cams and boost, all three blew engines.
