Cam Question

Did they blow the engine because of the cam or because of their driving style? Also, how old were these people who grenaded their engines?

forget the age of the people and the cam theory.
they had mechanical failures due to detonation.;)
and linux i believe had a falty wrist pin that finally gave out.

yeah i heard about linux's pin. that was a slow and painful death for that engine. so you think the cams are not the cause huh perf?

no but to confirm it you need to know they were installed properly like i meanted earlier. even just the exhaust cam installed wrong can create a HUGE problem. but IMO the cams had nothing to do with the problem.(99% sure)
CH knows alot about these cams so if he posted the cams specs as he did i trust they are pretty mild and can be used in both N/A and turbo with positive results.

being one of the three whose car has blown up I could safely assume that the cams played no part, niether did advanced timing because I drive a P5 not an MP3. Driving style, well thats up to you, I only hit one autocross between the time it was installed and when it blow up, (3 weeks). Faulty ignition did play a huge roll though. if you've ever looked under the hood of most other late model cars like the vw's you'll notice they have ignition coils or coil pack going to every cylinder. Mazdas only have one for every two, pretty weak stuff. It's cost effeciant though, and that seemed to be the only thing that mattered at the time.

the ignition system on the proteges , your right , do have only two coilpacks that fire 1+4 then 3+2 cylinders respectfully in that order.
i wouldnt say though that it is a faulty system. it works very well but high boost and cylinder pressures along with temps can make it taxing on the ignition system.
i do agree though that individual coils aregreat upgrade. i think this is posible once you go stand alone management only. you cant convert the standard ecu .

so what is the deal? I have an Mp3 and i know the advanced timing is not good for a turbo. I plan to go with a turbo by the end of the year, but also i am considering right now to get the cams within the next week, and have them installed. I dont want to get them if they are going to cause problems with the turbo, or what about if i swap out the Mp3 ecu with a Protege5 ecu, should i have the same problems?

There is another post that is addressing the cam question right now. The guy says that he has 200 miles on the Mazdaspeed cams and they are working fine.

The Protege5 ecu didn't help me, don't rely on that. Just keep the boost at the designated levels and make sure you have enough fuel and everythings set up right. At this moment I'd tell you to hold off on the cams, I think I've decided not to put them back on the car when I put the engine back together. Now if you get cam gears and have them tuned by a professional then by all means do, you'd see great gains and at the same time you could adjust the timing to something reasonable for a turbo application. On that note mine are on the market...:)
