Calling all MS3 Owners with smoking Turbos...

^Thanks for the writeup, ....

great write up man. def sheds a lot of light in many dark places....

Speedy that is just awesome, helpful and informative Im sure we all appreciate the time and effort put forth.

Thanks. My friend here in town has an 07 MS3 and out of curiosity, he put a racepipe on resulting in tons of smoke. He had his turbo replaced only to find out the new turbo was leaking too, right out of the box! He got another turbo replaced. He's on his third turbo now and went to inspect his turbo and found that the dealer had stripped one of the stock DP mounting bolts on the turbo (stripped on turbo), so there was no bolt in that hole. Yes, the dealer actually left the bolt out. Now, he is in the process of getting that turbo replaced with a fourth turbo. His only mod is a CAI.

The backfire is just raw fuel ingniting in the exhaust. My friends fd does it almost every shift. My speed does it with less regularity on upshifts, It sounds awesome in a tunnel.(2thumbs)

And also destroys the cat converter and O2 sensors very quickly.

If I were your friend, I'd say screw it with the dealer and go to another or just install an upgraded/reworked turbo myself...

Sorry to hear that...

Yea, he's pretty pissed. Well, when all is said and done, he will have a brand new turbo, all expenses paid, on a car with 20K+ miles. Also, their service dept. should get a little better and more educated on MS3. I think I'd rather go to a dealer that has f'cked up a turbo install, than one that hasn't. At least they know what not to do anymore.

True...

Why would you be dropping money on a new turbo? Are you planning to upgrade? If not, the dealer should be the one to drop the cash...

IF the dealer denies my claim for a new turbo, what choice do I have? If I am the one buying, then it will definitely be an upgrade

We're on the west coast!

We're on the west coast!

sounds like a sick excuse for a road trip to me. ive got friends in NY, Boston, Hartford, Providence and more. I could show yall around and then some. not in a gay way.....sorry.....lol.

im going to buy a catch can and some ngk plugs right now. i hope those two will both put to sleep my stuttering and blow by.

do you think when i put on my TBE in the spring if i left the first cat on i would be alright? the one right after the turbo instead of cutting it at the turbo? im putting a high flow mini cat around mid-way also. im assuming that there will be no smoke if all goes as planned. no smoke with the stock exhaust at all besides the 15 degree curse that the east coast weather brings to it. maybe the first cat and my high flow will save me from doom. ??

Thanks for the invite, sounds like a hella party! My wife is afull time student right now, so road trips are not an option! I'm playing Mr. Mom with my 5 yr old.

With the exhaust plans, I think you have the right idea putting the high flow cat in. Did i understand you're gonna leave the stock cat in and put in a second high flow cat? I wouldn't do that. The first cat looks like a cheese grater. The channels are like 1/8" apart. Plus, it is at the stock exhaust flow. If you can cut it out and weld it to 3" pipe, you might be ok, cause it is f_ckin big. It may support the flow if cut off those small pipes, but I don't know without a flow test. If I were you, i'd try and get some higher flow cats to put in your custom exhaust.

Beside all this, you shouldn't be worried whether it will smoke or not. Put a race pipe in place of the second cat and let it idle for like 20 min. If it starts smoking (may take a few trys) go to the dealer and get the new turbo. From what I understand, it IS a bad batch of turbos and Hitachi Warner has issued a new turbo to Mazda for warranty replacements. I'm about to try this test in about a week. My friend that had 2 bad turbos on his MS3 is going to give me his PG race pipe to test my turbo. Thats all he had when his car started smoking.

Good luck bro and if I need to travel to the east coast for work, i'll let you know!

Speedy, are you sure you're not east side? you seem pretty alright hahah amazing two bad turbos Let us know whats up after test pipe install

I spent 2 years in Norfolk, VA (Navy), so I guess I have a little east side blood in me. I hung out in queens for the weekend with a friend from my ship. I gotta hand it to you east coasters, you know how to drive. Here in the northwest, the left lane is the slow lane and you get a ticket for using the right lane to go around people (my last ticket). I couldn't fight that one since he got me on video and clocked me at 90.

Most of us are cool over here on the west coast, although most of those damn tree-hugger, prius driving types in Seattle are idiots.

I don't care if gas hits $5/gal, I'll love dumping a load of black smoke on those hybrids!

I'm still waiting to borrow the race pipe from my friend....I'll post results whether or not it smokes.

Well, I installed my friends gutted cat stock mid pipe and so far no smoke! Nothing but clean air. I religiously warm up and cool down my car and have been running ams oil synthetic oil since after break in. My friend on the other hand has gone through 2 turbos and his third is smoking now. He rarely warms up his car or cools it down.

I get ocassional smoke on start up....no mods on 2007 w/ 7,500 miles. Changed oil at 3,400 to Mobil 1 extended life and again at 7,500. Oil level drops approx 1/4 qt between changes.

That's not true. Some have it stock and some have it with race pipes and others have it with down pipe upgrades.

it is actually true. i know some have seen smoke with a fully stock TBE but it is not common, and more often than not, it is just condensation.
with my race pipe...zero smoke. as soon as that first cat comes off.... the people next door call the fire dept. !

Key, you nailed it on the heat cycle, warm then cool. Really glad to to hear about pipe results! I know I shouldn't be, but all this Bad hitachi smoke trip still has me anxious anyways . Drggin my feet on Cork install?!
