Calipers done...my first mod!

Looks good, I did mine sunday. I also painted the rotor hubs and hats so I wouldn't have to deal with the rust. I've seen alot worse than that for rust though. Mine were as bad.

Blue Ridge Mazda in KC didn't do s*** when I took my car in with the TSB from the ProtegeFAQ. They sanded it and cleaned a little bit (I would be prepped to just paint myself but it's too damn cold/windy.

bad!

Phreak...just wait it out until Spring. Not like they'll rust through anytime soon...I think technically they don't have to do jack because the TSB is for 2001 & 2002. Just depends whether they feel like being pricks or helping a brotha out.

Remember: when you want something done right...do it yourself!

Yeah, there's a few of us on here. My mountain bike (Cannondale F2000) will be on the roof this Spring. Few questions for you...

1) Your car looks good...do you get any rubbing with the H&R springs?
2) What tray did you get that fit the factory rack? I'm looking at the Mazda tray (Yakima) because it's holds the bike upright without taking the front wheel off.

Regarding your sig..."NEW HOUSE Why my toys aren't cooler" Totally agree man: my mortgage and child - why my toys are so old! ;)

a few answers..

1) nope, no rubing w/ the H&Rs.. I'm going to step up to 205/50-16s in teh front here in the next coupel weeks.. don't expect any problems..
2) all info on teh bike rack on my car is posted here; http://www.msprotege.com/vbb225/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12622&highlight=bike+rack The only difference is those pictures don't show the fairing.. Get the fairing, it's a world quieter with that on. I went for fork mount because it's just overall sturdier and more secure. I'll take the wheel off if I don't have to worry about my bike flying off in te wind.

the new house is a good excuse. :) It was either that or build a wicked turbo setup for the 7. the house won, the turbo will be another year or so.. (350hp, 2500lbs.. you figure out the fun factor) :D

rx7...yeah I was checking those out...will have to find some excuse for the wife to get those... :D

watch the 205/50-16's...a real b**** to find a good tire selection. that's the same tire size my focus took, and i couldn't find jack through the tire rack. finally settled on kuhmo ecsta 712's -- very nice summer tires!

appreciate the heads up on the fork mounting. i've never had a roof rack, so i figured one mounting method was as good as another. i'll take a look in the Spring once I put the rack on -- still in the original box in my basement.

Well I warped one stock one, so I figured why not... powerslot + Hawk HPS = happy brakes :D

as far as the tires? they have the ones I want in that size and not in the 195/50-16s so that's the main reason I'm switching... A hell of a lot easier to find the 205s than the 195s! (getting Yoko AVS ES100's... Great tires for the $$)

If only my budget was as big as my wishlist ;)

Yeah the Yoko's are nice...I couldn't find them when I was looking to re-tire my Focus. And then I terminated my lease 3 months early to buy the Protege5. Not a bad move I'd say....

Let me know how the 205's work out for you. It's either that, or moving to 17's. But then the brakes will look REALLY small...so maybe not.

Decisions...decisions....

yeah, there is always that option...

"I already need two new tires... While I'm doing it...."

Those frikken Enkei RPM2's are just SCREAMING my name...

Don'tcha hate that?!! It would be a tough sell to my wife with the 17" rims -- hell it was a stretch to get the P5. She's great with it though...I don't mean to paint her like a b****. But when you own a house $1000 on 17's and tires is a real luxury. So I'll prob stick with the stock wheels.

Speaking of upgrades...I've been trying to get a Dean Colonel mountain bike for the last two years. I can never find the $3k to get it. Oh well, as Jimmy (Buffett) says, "Someday I will...."

Oh...just checking out a speedometer error utility (I can find the link if you want it), and a 215/45-16 would be closer to the stock size than a 205/50. Both are acceptable -- less than 2% error. But a quick look on TireRack knocked me off my seat -- Michelin Pilot Sports in that size are $228 EACH! DAAAAMMMMNNNN!

here' the link...

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

I send Rishie a PM, I dunno if I can actually get 215mm up front w/ teh H&Rs.. Maybe, maybe not... But eitehrway, I'm not going for pilot sports... Nice, but not worth twice as Much.. I have the ES100s on my 7, and they're frikken unbeatable for the price. About $80 +/-5 depending on which size we're talking about here..

And yes... I just got a house 2 months ago.. All of the sudden things are getting a little more scrutiny. $1k for wheels & tires is a bit much to squeak "under the radar"

Caliper paint? no big deal....

"If it's <$100, it doesn't count." - my theory on mods :)

My theory here too...but with one addition:

If the bills are paid, and it's <$100, it doesn't count.

eh, I don't think I can ever count all the bills as "paid" everytime I pay one another one shows up.. When do they all count as "paid" exactly!?

this has ben a thin month, but a friend of mine is moving into the house this weekend, so his rent $$ = my toy $$ :)

BTW, nice avatar ;)

Well...once they're paid for the month that is...we have a little organizer we put bills in, so once it's clear I can buy toys. Or food and diapers for my son!!! LOL

Thanks for the avatar...a lady I work with sent it to me, and I instantly thought it would be a nice avatar. Can't wait for the wife to see it -- she'll laugh her ass off!

I'm still working on getting the organization system down... So far I'm still paying transfer fees, and startup deposits and all of that stuff....

toys or food? tough choice...

toys or beer... really tough choice ;)

Here's the one my wife and I bought...definitely worth the $40 for the number of fights it's prevented. We have the one without drawers...the slots are numbered 1-31 for each day of a month. Best investment we ever made!

that's cool... might have to look into that...

Right now I'd just be alright if I could remeber to put them all in the same place.. I keep putting them places to "remeber" where they are (and avoid the cats from scattering thm aroudn the house) and then I end up reorganizing an area and not finding them...

I've got it all pretty much sorted out now, but I have NO clue where my car registration renewal thing went.. that was due like a month ago...

so uh, red calipers are cool ;)

The problem with paint is that brake fluid can remove it in an instant, plus in a few years you will need to redo your calipers.

Powder coating costs a couple hundred (you also have to be without your calipers for a couple weeks) but the end result is a thousand times better.

I wouldn't doubt that brake fluid will take some of the paint off -- my calipers are only painted in the areas you can see. So the backside is still bare metal.

Also, I doubt the paint will just chip or flake off, I used G2 paint which is epoxy based. That's why I went with it over a typical High Heat paint.
