CAI hissing...

Is this normal?

I just installed the Injen CAI today. The hissing noise sounds like it's coming from the filter. I checked all other clamps to make sure they tight and no leaks. I heard of ppl who have installed the CAI say it makes a great sound but I was assuming that was exhaust wise and such. This hissing noise sounds like some major suction and it definitely noticable from several feet away from the car, almost sounds like my tire losing air.

If this is normal than I'll get use to it, but if not, I wanna fix it before something bad happens.

For real???

geesh, that kind of suction makes me think twice 'bout the splash guard! hope no water gets up in there...

yes its normal....and the splash guard will do you no good....think about where that filter is....how in the world could ANYTHING splash on it.....its SURROUNDED by bodywork.....please don't waste your money.....as if you think about the level of the filter....if you would EVER drive your protege into water deep enough to submerge that filter.....well plain and simple you are abusing your car and you need to hydrolock your engine otherwise....don't worry about it.

:) Don't you worry about the hissing sound... it's normal
Every intake system will make the sound nomatter it's a CAI or a short ram. Personally, I love the hissing sound. So, I hope you enjoy that as well.

every one thinks i am loosing air i love it .. my Injen is just like that .. and i cant count how many times i pull to a red light and someone next to me is waving there hands for me to drop the window just to tell me my tire is going flat ... and i tell them no no its a CAI and ofcourse they ask "whats that" then it turns green and I tell them to listen and then romp on it lol

ah...................

any intake sounds awesome when you blip the throttle and get that sucking sound when the butterfly valve in the throttle body opens up....

SRI's make that hissing intake sound as well?

Do SRI's sound the same as CAI's? If so (yes yes.. I'm just going for sound...) I'll stick with an SRI.

My favorite part is when you turn off the car - if you get out quick enough, it sounds like your car has a BOV, in slow mo

I have to disagree with you Sir Nuke. Take a read of this thread.

Several people have flooded their engine. If you can spend the $40 for a by-pass valve I think its worth it. It could save you big bucks.

hey hawkwind101,

i think sir nuke was just talking about the splash guard, not the bypass valve. the only bad thing about the bypass valve is that you lose whatever gains you got from the CAI. but then again, it saves your engine from hydrolock. you have to be driving in waters pretty deep for it to hydrolock though... and in this case, the bypass valve will work for you. just don't drive through waters that are up to your hoodline and think the bypass is going to save you!

Some early bypass valve users were quite unhappy to find out what happens when bits of the valve get sucked into the engine. I think that was fixed but I'm not sure. I think they tried to get out of covering the engine damage, too. Not sure if they succeeded.

me=stupid...what exactly would happen if water got into the intake?

A couple of drops? Not much. Dunk the whole filter under water, however, and your cylinders fill with water. Water won't compress like air/fuel, so it blows out wherever it can, and if it needs to make a hole to get out, it can, ruining pistons, cylinders, heads, valves, etc.
Kinda like taking a 9:1 compression motor and instantly making it 100:1. Maybe not entirely accurate numbers, but you get the idea.

Wowzers...

I think this was my first thread that actually made it to two pages. Thanks everybody for all your responses!!
I don't mind the sound at all since I know it's suppose to be there, just worried me at first.

you become Patio #2 and get a broken rod and a new motor :D

oh and those valve whatevers are crap, if you look at it logically they only work when the intake is fully submerged, which means, if itsnot fully submerged, you get water into your motor, so yeah, theyre crap!
