Buying a used P5 - advice?

Hmmm... hadn't thought about bikes. I have a trunk-mounted bike rack for my current Protege. Guess I may have to try stuffing my bike in the hatch to start with, LOL! I think maybe you're talking about the "feet" of the rack? Yah, I'll look up what Thule says is the correct model. With 4 doors it should still be easy. So maybe rackless is actually a better buy for me.

when i had my thule rack for my sedan i was able to put both kayaks and two bikes on top of the car. with the factory rack for the Protege5 am able to get two kayaks or two boats.....not all 4. i just put the bikes on the back of the car when i need to move all 4.....use the big mouth attachments for the ski racks....

Hey folks... am thinking about buying a used P5,
...

Buy something faster, you will be much happier in the long run, the P5 looks great and handles well but anything with four wheels will take it.

Ah, cool, I'd rather back-mount the bikes anyway, and if the factory racks can accomodate the ski rack and deal with a boat or two, that'll work. Thanks, great info!

Versatile is better than just "fast"

Maybe, if speed was the need. Then I'd buy a "real sportscar" (I guess).

But... what I'M looking for is something that is FUN to drive (takes curves well, isn't stiff, decent acceleration), looks decent (unique without being freakish or overly trendy), and that will be a gear-hauling work-horse also... PLUS, isn't huge in size or a gas chugger (no SUVs), and is reliable. Oh, and pref around $9-12k.

Seems like the P5 fits that bill pretty well! If you know an alternative, I'm all ears.

I have no problem going fast in my car.... :D
in fact, I took a Nissan Sentra the other night and smoked him.

I bought a 2003 P5 about 2 1/2 weeks ago... I payed $14,500... SportMatic... 20,000 Miles... It is the Vivid Yellow! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this color!!!

The options on the car are, Leather, 6-disc in dash, power everything except seats, rook rack, and whatever other options there are... Although I was not lucky enough to get the subwoofer :-( O well! LoL...

The car feels great, good acceleration, good looks... All at a reasonable price... I know I payed a little much for mine, but as I am always told, a car is only worth as much as your willing to pay!

The stock tires handle well when it's dry, but slip all over when it rains. Snow tires are actually better in the rain. Also, the tire size is odd, so you have a limited choice of brands.

If you have kids, you should know that the top tether strap for the rear centre seat is inside the cargo area, near the bumper of the car. That means it cuts diagonally across the cargo area, preventing you from putting large items in the trunk (i.e. a stroller).

A very fun car to drive.

Yes, the stock Dunlop tires are excellent on dry surface. Grip the road well and controllable sliding when you want it and make it to.
But they are worthless when it's wet. Kind of dangerous to use them on freeway when it's rainning hard.

I'm with you there. Its not ultra-cheap. Close to $12k and "price somewhat negotiable." But, its got suspicious all over it. He got it at an auction. Its pretty durn low miles. He's driving it around heavily. Trying to get it not to look sooo rolled back? I dunno. I just don't trust used car folks. :/ He DID say I could take it home (1.25 hours from the dealer at least) and have "my mechanic" look at it.

Check for rust. Many cars on Ebay (or other auction place) have been flooded.

AAAAhhhhhh... a very kind soul (thank you, thank you!) did a CarFax on it for me. It looks to me like it COULD be a rollback situation. It was last recorded at 9,814 miles almost a year ago (05/27/2004), and the dealer says he got it 2 months ago with 8k miles on it and has put 2k miles on it since. Doesn't add up, to me. Can you roll back a digital odometer? Does this seem odd to youall also?

I am not sure if you can roll it back. But I am pretty sure you can make it stop adding up, especially with electronic digital odometer.

if you swap out the gauge cluster it will read whatever the car the cluster was taken from read.

Ooooh, that's sneaky. Could I just order a brand new one from Mazda, or isn't it that easy?

I just bought a 2002 (.5, I think) three months ago. 12 grand $. 32k, tiptronic-shiftronic-replaced stock tires w/ BFGs. Great car. Nothing but fun. Love the car. moonroof definetly nice touch.

wow if i didnt buy my car i would guess you test drove mine:)

mines a black 2003.5 but it has high mileage..about 49,500 right now, bought it with 47,500

runs great and doesnt have a scratch on it, the interior is flawless so i am thinking it is mostly higway mileage cause there is no fabric wear at all from getting in and out alot, it also had a bra on it so there are no chips in the paint on the front so at least the previous owner took care of it

when i bought it in december last year the original sticker price was $14,500 but it had been on the lot for a few months so they lowered it to $11,995, i offered them $10,500, they refused so i gave them my number to call me if they changed their minds...ten minutes later the phone rang and they accepted my offer and i bought the car the next day

anyway, paying over $12k for a p5 is probably too much unless it is is the certain color or has the options your are willing to spend more to have

oh yeah, i have had one minor problem since i have had it

an abs wheel speed sensor went out and i had to get it replaced

the dealer didnt have it in stock so they gave me a 2005 mazda 6 to use for a few days while they ordered it in and replaced it

more on odo

Sorry to bring this forward again, but, I'm still curious...

Could I just call Mazda and buy a new odometer, pop it in and viola, I have a 0 miles car again? Or is it more complex than that? Maybe milage is actually stored in a chip? (Though then maybe skip the odo and reprogram the chip?) Just trying to understand what I'm up against!

Thanks :)
