burning oil like crazy... wtf?

simdrew, we didn't hear back from you so i am assuming correcting the timing had no effect on the oil consumption? Hearing someone's first hand experience that timing had actually caused this burn off would indeed be very reassuring. I would MUCH rather re-time it than change the rings...

I recently had my timing belt changed by a shop that i will never trust again, among other issues i had with their service I suspect the timing to be wrong too, I can't imagine that causing it but it coincides exactly with the moment i had the belt replaced. Prior to that it didn't burn a single drop of oil over a roughly 3500mile period. And in retrospect, it's been feeling wierd since it came out of that service... They installed my tsudo header at the same time, if anything it should have felt a bit better not worse.

I just got the car a couple of months ago and have just recently passed the 100 000 km warranty (i'm in Canada) so i am pretty concerned... There's no smoke, it's strange, i should be seeing smoke at startup at least until the midpipe cat reaches operating temp; i see nothing. no smoke at all.

taking it where it should have gone in the first place; buddy's shop, unless the dealership/mazda are willing to let less than 2000km above the warranty slide... this is a bit premature to be burning this much oil.

i started having problems after the timing belt was changed. now 25,000km later i burn 1L oil every 300-400km
i've got a new head on the way so i'll put new seals in and do a valve job and hope that helps. also inspect the cylinder walls while the head is off

My car went into mazda today. It burned 4L in 5000km and then 2L in 3700km. They said there was nothing to find and the only thing they could come up with was that my header and intake are flowing more than stock and oil was going through the PCV system because of the vacuum change.

I call bulls*** and they found a way to cop out of actually looking at the car. Plus they accused me of racing right off the bat because of the header, intake and coilovers.

I think I will take it to another dealership and see what they have to say.

Matt

That's a good idea...(taking your business elsewhere) I called my dealership prior to installing a header and they said it would be no problem at all should i have any unrelated issue.

since engine replacement becomes a viable option I'm in the talks about a possible fs-ze swap with jdm ecu and harness, wonder what works and what doesn't with that swap (gauges mostly, the rest must be a no brainer with stock ecu and harness, anyway i am waiting on some info from the local seller who is getting rid of this setup) Wonder if it's any more reliable?

Well, checked the timing, that wasn't it.

the intake and exhaust marks line up with the side of the head and point straight at each other, the crank pulley timing mark is aligned with the T mark on the indicator (says 10 at the left, then it has little marks to allow adjustments towards the right, where the 1 would be it says T)

I am slowly looking for a new lump, hope something interesting comes along at the right moment...

Have you figured it out yet? I paid the dealer $100 to do a compression check and leak down check. Then an additional $300 to remove the head to verify #4 cylinder is scorched hoping Mazda would warranty it. Turned out this is common problem with Mazdas and Fords but they accused me of running my engine without oil or using aftermarket oil filters. What a load of crap.

I'm burning a quart of oil every tankful of gas and is waiting for the rod to break before getting a used engine.

Mine is no longer unde warranty; i am putting oil in it regularly and checking it more often than i fuel up. I too am waiting for the break but pre-emptively i am looking for something else to substitute that piece of s*** with.

I am actively researching KL-ZE swap because there is no way i am putting another FS-DE in there and the FS-ZE is too elusive (if hoping to get ecu and harness)

If anyone has any info or suggestions to who i should be pestering with questions; all i am looking for is a list of required parts/components and soem hints on how to wire the ecu. I've got the will and the man power.

5 year 100k warranty? damn i got screwed, i only had 5 year 36k warranty. bastards...

I think you misread what was stated.

<- still burning oil and still adding more in. I'll be overhauling my oil system after Xmas so we'll see if that has anything to do with it.

ill be checking my pcv valve, can anyone direct me to a how to? i tried the search function to no avail.

my car smokes at startup. Are their any really bad side effects to worn stem seals? my car smokes at startup. will it continue to get worse?

pull it out. Shake it. If it rattles, it's good. If it doesn't, replace it :)

Are you sure its not condenstation? ALso the PCV valve is pretty straight forward. Easier then plugs and wires. Just pull out and replace

Edit: Its just as easy as amaff makes it sound.

Check the PCV valve.... I have been though 3 in 30k!
LOL I've gone from stock PCV to Millenia PCV and then back to stock again (Millenia wasn't doing anything so...). I also have some heavy duty check values before the PCV so it never sees boost or anything. I'm pretty sure the damn thing rattled the last time I had it out but now I can't remember so who knows. I know the Millenia one was fine... Guess I'll have to check after work.
