burning oil like crazy... wtf?

thats how mine started out, now its a ******* smoke show every morning. redonkulas (deadhorse

I've got no smoke, no oil in the coolant, and no drips at all. But after about 5,000km it's all gone. Where does it all go?

I stopped putting in synthetic because there's no point anymore. I have to check my oil whenever I get gas now.

The only thing I have noticed is that my oil filler cap may be leaking, it always looks a little damp around there. It's sure on tight though...
Mine started the same way, then one day, poof, massive amounts of smoke. My oil cap is the same way. I feel it leaks sometimes no matter how tight it is on, but not enough to cause this massive amount of oil disappearing...

The only effective way to chk valve stem seals involves the same amount of work, gasket replacement & motor teardown as it does to just change them & be done with it. How else do you check them? If you have none of the symptoms listed above then there is nowhere else for it to be going unless our lame ass PCV valves are sending it thru the intake but the speed & amounts that are being talked about here make that seem a little far fetched without causing other problems like your egr & IAC clogging every week & fouling spark plugs too. If it was the oil cap you'd have an obvious mess not a magic show of disappearing oil.

unless someone wants to install a catch can to see if the oil is going through the pcv system, thats a hard one to isolate. Hmm... maybe a cheap fuel filter put inline with the PCV hose, something to try.

From my personal and professional experience, valve seals generally cause a nice puff of smoke at start up. I haven't noticed any smoke at any time with my car.

The P5 has a problem with either over heating or oil starvation that will damage the rings, cylinder walls or both. I even know someone who had broke an arm. It's usually the #4 cylinder. Let's face it guys. Our P5 looks good and handles well but it is a POS when it comes to quality and reliability.

A compression test is not a reliable test but a leak down or visual is. I have 93k miles and have been burning oil for the last 13k. Put a qt in at every fill up and just waiting for it to die before replacing it with a used engine. Once the engine is replaced it'll be in the ads.

Mazda never made a quality car like Honda and may never will.

the old 1g protege / escort/tracer (fazda) were way better engine wise than any 3rd gen ever will. No need for all the doom and gloom. The new cars (3, 6, etc) are stout as well. The FS-DE was a bit of a glitch.

i had a 91 escort gt with a 1.8L and that car took a beating and never complained about it! some old farmer hit me and wrote it off though :(

yep. If I were going to build a car for FStreet Prepared, that would totally be it (escort GT/tracer LTS / Protege LX)

Ok, back on topic!

That's is really mature. The truth hurts doesn't it or did I burst your little bubble?(rlaugh)
These cars are auctually built quite nice if you dont drive them like they are a little race car all of their life....Nice fit and finish..not the best motor to mod, but nowhere near a POS by any means.
Sorry to burst your negative bubble.

Crashed,

Are you the original owner of your car? If not then that would explain a lot of your oil burning, becuase you have no idea how the previous owner treated the car. Also I thought my car was burning oil (1qt every 3k) but that turned out to be the oil sending unit. I replaced it and the car no longer uses oil and I have roughly 158-160k on the car as it is. OE motor and tranny and I drive it everyday like I stole it.

My family has had a few honda products and well that couldnt stand up to the beating, but then again some people have better luck with other cars. So if your going to ditch the car when you get a used motor put in it why even bother to wait tell that point? Just go trade it in or sale it. I do realize not everyone has had good luck with Mazda but then again my family will never purchase another honda or GM product ever again. Dispite what the public in general has to say about thier quality.

no your right. I have never seen a honda smoke before, I have been living in a fantasy world where uncle ben's rules and honda motors never blow.

your might need some help with that pessimistic outlook. or just please trade in your P5 and get another car you can beat on and then say that car is problematic.

and my littil bubble is called MAZDAS247.....

Oh wow, I'm not having any problems like that. Just lots of smoke and oil consumption.

ok, update.

Changed the oil yesterday, 1L of oil came out so that means I burnt 2.5 litres in 5000km. No smoke from the tailpipe whatsoever during this whole time and I crawled underneath while doing the oil change and there are no external leaks.

I am still under the 5 year 100,000km warranty so I talked to my dealership this morning. They said it should be a warrantable problem according to Mazdas powertrain warranty.

He mentioned that they have seen this probem before do to carbon buildup. No smoke from the tailpipe but burning oil. So he suggested that I try an emission service/clean first and keep a oil consumption log which Mazda will supply me.

The only stipulation he said is that the diagnostic time will be mine to pay to find the problem. Once the problem is found and it is deemed warranty, then Mazda will cover everything including the diagnostic time. If it is not deemed a warrantable issue then I have to pay the diagnostic time and repair if I tell them to fix it.
