burning oil like crazy... wtf?

um no. not even close. keep dreaming. I guarantee you will still have to fill up 2L at your next fill up(cool)

Well, I go through a tank of gas every three days, so I'll post back on Wednesday and we'll see, eh? I went from spitting out a bunch of smoke to none, and I did everything that caused it to do it before (foot off gas deaccelerating at high RPM).

i went to the dealer cuz i still have warranty on my car. i had to take it in to get the tranny rebuilt anyway

what your experincing is just old fashion bad timming. that has to do with the way the motor breaths not oil, but still will yield smoke. you fixed one problem, now just on to the oil prob. the leakdown test is a good test to try. if not you can try the teaspoon of oil and compresion test too. sorry but there are those here that can help you decipher the results you come up with(hear ya)

Well, since my car isn't smoking anymore (which was a very noticable cloud of smoke before, and now nothing), I'll wait to see if it's burned any oil when I go to fill up again, and then we'll know if there's any other problems.

you sure it wasn't just fuel you were seeing burned? B/c timing and burning oil are mostly unrelated (esp. if it's only a tooth off....)

It was definitely oil, but to be fair, I did also service my already pretty clean EGR valve and functional PCV valve.

My thought is, if you have a piston pulling during a intake phase and the valve is closed, where is it going to come from. I may be completely wrong and still be missing 2 quarts on my next fill up, but I try to remain hopefully optimistic.

I might have the same issue. i just dyno'd 15whp less than 2 years ago!! I think it's bad timing. I'm doing my leakdown test and trying some seafoam next week.

im heading off to the dealer right now to see wtf is going on... and the seamfoam seamed to just make it worse for me. i did the full treatment. are you doing the leakdown test yourself?

I'm having a shop do it for me.

My car just started ingesting massive amounts of oil as well. I assumed it was the turbo but it seems like now it isn't. 200 psi across all four cylinders in a compression test but who knows. Just keep us updated as to what all is going on. I might just be in the same boat...

wow these motors suck... the official results: 175psi dry, 190psi wet
is that enough of a difference to cause problems? it still smokes like a mofo after it sits over night

No...That looks like good number to me?
Valve seals..you say it smokes on cold start ups right....Has anyone suggested worn stem seals?

Yeah the same thing was just recommended to me. I just don't know how to check something like that. I have to wait to get my turbo back and then I'll have a leak-down test done. Funny thing is, I had about 3 ppl's "professional opinion" that with compression numbers like I had a leak-down test wouldn't show any differently... I only have 58k miles too!!!

to burn up the head and not the rest is due to oil starvation of the system. a instance would be that these cars can slosh the oil in the oil pan away from the pick-up starving the system of oil causing the head to go dry but the bottom still having oil to splash around lubricating the lower end. this can be caused by hard long turns (on and off ramps).

now if you ran low on oil it would be the opposite. it would pump what littil oil you have up into the head and starve the bottom end of any oil. which is not a design flaw of our cars, its just user end stupidity(sssh)

oh and you guys a common way of telling if its rings is if it still smokes bad after running and even more if your hard into the gas. and if its the head gasket is if there is oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil, or if you can smell the exhaust and it will smell like a high pitch funk. and you would be loosing coolant through the motor.

good stuff..nice tips! thx

well guess what... driving today, leave a stop sign light left hand corner, oil light comes on and goes off. Strange... drive some more, high speed right hand sweeper, oil light comes on, left off gas finish corner light is off. Get home from work and check oil. Not even showing on the dipstick.

This is after 6000km on a oil change with Royal Purple Synthetic 10w30. I have never experienced this before. I bought the car with 50000km on it and it now has 86000km. Oil changed regularly.

Looks like i'm in the same boat as a bunch of you

Matt

I've got no smoke, no oil in the coolant, and no drips at all. But after about 5,000km it's all gone. Where does it all go?

I stopped putting in synthetic because there's no point anymore. I have to check my oil whenever I get gas now.

The only thing I have noticed is that my oil filler cap may be leaking, it always looks a little damp around there. It's sure on tight though...
