Bumper accident

Dog gonnit! Got into a minor fender/bumper accident today. Some fool driving a white 91 Mazda 626 DX headed straight towards me in MY lane on the road.

It was a small turning access road to Fry's Electronic store. Sucker must have thought he was driving on a race trace or something. Hugging MY side of the curb like it was his teddy bear.

Thank goodness we both were not going too fast to hit head on. He caught his mistake last moment and twisted his direction to the right before his left rear bumper caught my left front bumper. If I had a little room to my right I would have avoided him completely. My brakes worked really well... slowed me to a crawl without even making a noise.

His car did more damage to MY car too. His bumper has an obvious huge black scratch on it, but my bumper is all torn up on the lower left side. My fog light on that side doesn't work, but not cracked or anything. My hood is scratched on that side too. Doesn't seem to be any internal damage to cause unwanted leaks of any kind. I probably got lucky that the hit wasn't past the 5 MPH bumper collision limit. Headlight is scratched to hell, but still intact.

So the question is this, how can I get a carbon hood to replace my damaged hood? :D

Ok ok, just kidding. I was so upset that it was the only insane idea I could come up with that cheered me up.

The dude had insurance and used same insurance company as me, Geico, so lucky me. The only problem now is to hope he doesn't forfeit admittance to being at fault. Him and his buddy at the scene were totally knowing that they were at fault (duh, coming staight at me on my lane??), but insurance lady told me that there are people out there who would try to dispute the charge to get away with accepting the claim on their policy. One thing though, I know where he lives and I'm not afraid of going back there (since I had to follow him back to his place so he could show me the proof of insurance card that he didn't remember to keep inside his car) to beat the crap out of him and his buddy. Hopefully, everything will work because they did seem like decent people (I also know where they work too) and were very nice to me and very cooperative with the information.

Getting repair appraisal tomorrow morning.

Dude, we feel for you...and I HOPE the guy is stand up and takes responsibility for his actions......

JUST A WORD TO THE WISE.....in the future...IF this should ever happen to you again, or to someone you are with, or anyone you know? DON'T MOVE YOUR CAR, leave it right in the road where the accident happened!! CALL THE COPS....HAVE AN ACCIDENT REPORT FILLED OUT....its the ONLY way you can protect yourself against those that will screw you.....I speak from experience. IT DOES happen.

I had a guy in a van sitting beside me at an intersection, I was in the far right hand lane, he was in the center lane, we were at a light....across from us on the RIGHT hand corner was a gas station....the light turned green we both took off and he turned right OVER the front of my car and totally screwed up my front left fenter.....there was no fixing it...it tore the metal...it had to be replaced....he acted all nice and s*** too.....till calling him the next day and he told us to pack sand. we had no proof, no witnesses, we couldn't even PROVE he was there....live and learn.

Yikes...that sounds like it definitely could have been a major accident....never good to be in an accident, but I'm happy it wasn't a lot worse than it could have been.

As for the hood....was the hood damaged other than the scratch...as in was it bent up or dented or whatever? If it was and they have to replace it, I'll bet you really could get the carbon fibre hood as it's probably less expensive than the OEM hood.

I think I would be willing to bet big money that the CF hood would be cheaper....auto makers are SOOOOOOOOOOOOO proud of their parts!! lol

Back in highschool....we did an economics project....and it had to do with that very subject...how auto makers make so much off of parts and service....

we actually went though Chevrolet and "priced" a 1974 Nova PART BY PART!! and this was IN 1974, yep...every nut and bolt....and if I remember correctly the ONLY thing we didn't purchase through the dealer or price through them was the tires.....other than that...we went totally through the parts department....

Back then you could EASILY purchase this car for around $4200 NEW, putting it together ourselves...JUST THE PARTS cost in the neighborhood of $20,000!!!! it was totally unbelieveable to us at the time.....

Yes, it is damaged. The extent of the damage is probably minor to folks who take a car as a regular day to day transportation. At the corner of the hood, front driver-side corner, it is bent in at the tip/edge. The paint chipped off maybe up to an inch worth of surface area. Obviously, very visible. Fender, same thing... but it is a bit more bent and scratched than the hood is. In all honesty, if my car was a few years old I would be very satisfied to just get it repaired since I don't see it being that badly damaged.... but this is a new car... not even 6 months old....

The appraisal guy recommended a bodyshop to just have it repaired. Use a rubber hammer (whatever he called it) and vice-clamp specialized in gripping metal to be re-bent back to shape. Think it is fair for me to go back to that agent and request him to allow me to get replacement parts instead of repairing the parts on my car (hood and fender)? I just got my car back in November, so it's still fairly new... within one year old. I am just not sure if I am reasonable in doing so even though the bodyshops told me they promise the repair would be like new. Obviously it can't be like new... so you know. I'm being picky, but would it be for a good cause later on or no difference?

Mazda service rep told me to go directly to the bodyshop that they personally deal with, which here is called, B&B Body and Paint (highly recommended by the Mazda service rep). I called B&B up and they said that they do deal with Geico insurance (or at least have experience with Geico). I also checked with another bodyshop called, Heritage Body and Frame, and they sounded like they dealt with Geico insurance a lot more than B&B. They were recommended by the Geico appraisal rep over the B&B body and paint shop. Not sure who is better, but in '97 B&B received highest poll among Austin Chronicle readers... that's a while back though.

One thing, both do offer lifetime warranty on repairs as long as you own the car.

Anyways, if you have a suggestion don't hesitate to let me know. I am already anxious to get my MP3 fixed up ASAP. :)

Which Fry's? Was it the one in Arlington?

No, not that far. It's in Austin, Texas. North Austin area off of Loops 1/Mopac and Palmer Lane.

To say the least, the guy finally called back. Guess he decided it was to his best interest. After numerous attempts from Geico insurance to get in contact with him.

Unfortunately, the carbon hood deal is off. I not only have to play legit on all this, but I can't even get my hood or fender replaced. I have to have them repaired. The Geico appraiser would not change his mind on these two parts. I tried to convince him that it was a car less than 6 months old, but he still wouldn't buy it. He kept insisting that if it can be repaired then it needs to be repaired instead of replaced. (because the hood and fender is considered MINOR damage) I think I'll take pictures of it later, before I take it into the shop.

Therefore, I told him I'll come back to him if the repair isn't like what it ORIGINALLY was when I bought this car this past November (end of November). I'll hold him responsible, then I went on to tell him that I'll just change my insurance policy to another company if I am not satisfied. I think threatening to change my policy cut his confidence on our conversation, but he didn't change his mind so I'm not going to push this subject further with him.

Either way, I've been a Geico customer for over 5 years with a very clean record... maybe longer, and I've been on the verge of switching companies these past few months because I don't believe they are offering me the best deal they can dish out.

Allen, whether you know it or not...YOU have the right to have your car repaired ANY WAY you want...and WHERE EVER you want.....the insurance company can not stop you from doing that....so its really up to you....the fact now remains though is that the insurance company knows that its going to be a lot cheaper for them to REPAIR the parts then it is to replace them...and they really do not care if it means that the integrity of your car is lesser because of it....they are all about the bottom line....that is it.

what you needed was to have taken the car to a shop that will backup YOUR wants....and that way you could dispute what the insurance company wants to pay you to get the damages fixed...

you mentioned that the insurance guy had a specific repair shop in mind.....guess why? they MAY do good work...but they are obviously in the insurance companies pocket...and looking out for THEIR interest...not yours....that way THEY get more business....

as you can possibly tell...I HATE INSURANCE COMPANIES!!!!!

Pictures of my (previously) wreck car

Old news, but I never posted the pics to my car right after the wreck. Here's a couple shots I uploaded. I didn't bother taking pics of the new repairs... but only thing is that the new bumper just doesn't have the license plate drilled holes. So it is a bit nicer looking now... weeee... :D
