bucking

I've been disappointed in my P5 during rush-hour driving. As I creep along in first or second gear at low RPMs, the car, to put it simply--bucks along. No hint of stalling, just the herky-jerkys. When I start accelerating modestly, the car runs smoothly.

My P5 has a manual transmission, and I guess I could slip the clutch, but I shouldn't have to.

Anyone else experiencing this??

Yup, I get this all the time. I hate Bay Area traffic!!!!!!

Anywho, I found that by upgrading to the Sparcko Wires, it helped a little bit. Not completely, but when I'm cruising(read going hella slow in traffic) along, it takes away a bit of the jerk-iness.

yeah it real pisses me off when this happens to me. i dont do it on any other manual car i drive.

Try feathering the clutch so that some of the energy transfered is dissipated as friction. It won't wear out the disk because you are at such low RPM

Yeah I just end up feathering the clutch. This is a problem with the ECU programming in our vehicle along with other Mazdas. Every manual transmission Mazda I have ever driven is jerky in stop and go traffic unless you are very easy on the gas or feather the clutch like melicha8 said above.

This is a pretty common problem. Mine did it with under 1,000 miles on it. If the car is under warranty you may want to check with your dealer to see if they'll fix it. I got a new clutch, flywheel and t/o bearing put in. It's gone but then again I had them put in an ACT as long as they had the tranny out.:)

i really dont have this problem and i have a 2003 p5 and i let it run in low rpms and it dont gerk i guess i got lucky with this car

I got my clutch put in about 1yr after I got the car. When I compared the wear on the throwout bearing coming out to the one coming in I was amazed. The old one looked like it couldnt push one more clutch before it would fall apart. That thing had no seal and there was tons of play. It looks like a major flaw in our drivetrain......1YR that all!!!!

below what RPMs are we talking about?

and what the h@ll does "feathering" and "slip" the clutch mean????

My 88 323GT Turbo did NOT do it but my 99 Prot ES and 2K3 MSP do do it. Did I say that? Oh Well, must have been a design chg. I also miss my BLUE side view mirrors and super variable wipers (8 position switch).

Yeah, Linux is right. Our stock motor mounts suck, the engine wobbles like nothing I've ever seen. I want to get the AWR ones. My K&N drop-in seems to help a bit with the bucking too.

My commute is entirely in the city. At first the bucking was driving me nuts, but now i've just gotten used to it and have learned how to deal with it. Still sucks, but I just remind myself about the good attributes of the car.

WHY ARE YOU YELLING?

:D

scwashdc,

I take it you're from my neck of the woods? Yes city driving around here sucks big ass. My car bucks as well, but all I do is ease the clutch in, feather it, and put the car in neutral whenever possible.

which brings up a good question... what sort of price and installation headaches must be considered when looking at replacing motor mounts?

i dont know but my new intake helped to make 1st and 2nd more smoother. i think it's got something to do with better throttle response.

The things to consider are:

  1. Your car will vibrate more due to the stiffer mounts transfering more energy in the form of vibration to the cabin
  2. The front mount is easily accessed and replaced
  3. The rear mount will be a b**** to get at, and install due to it's impossible location.
