Breaking in the Engine

Did anyone do anything special or have any tips on breaking in the engine in the P5?

500 mile oil change to rid out the new metal
not driving over 4500 rpm's for 1000 miles

I know a lot of people have different info all along the same lines, but if anyone has any concrete Mazda related facts, please post.

IF you read the warranty, it says no break-in necessary, then sort of contradicts itself by saying that "awww, it couldn't hurt" if you did drive easy and vary speed first 1k mi.
Your two ideas are perfect. Early change, and low rpms. And dont forget to change the filter, too on that first change.
After that, your motor's rated for 7500, but a lot of us (myself included) do 3k anyway. Cant hurt!!!!

it don't come with synthetic, but thats what most people will recommend for you to run.

uh, no. a car shipped sythetic is the worst thing in the world. Long story (I did the full version in another thread), synthetics dont grab those particles that you're trying to get out like dino juice. there are no cars shipped synthetic.
but yeah, go synthetic. there are still some people here who use dino, as they will all tell you, regular oil maintenance makes more difference than type.

Cool dude. in stereos i am all but ignorant. I know what I like in sound, but have no idea about brands/combinations....
Just keep hitting all the threads, reading all the links, you'll be talking like some of the gear heads in here (which i aint) in no time!!!!!!

btw,
avoid long trips for a while, not until you hit 1k, 'cause you want your engine to be throughly broken in, idling your engine or keeping it at same rpm for a while is not good.

Lots of cars (high performance) ship with synthetic. Also, oil doesn't "grab" any particles, that's what the filter does. Those particles are mearly suspended in the oil, which will occur with anything you use.

I could've sworn the manual said 1000 kilometers, not miles.... you guys sure about that? Once I hit 600 miles I changed my oil and "had some fun" with her... now I'm feeling paranoid.

Of course, I've heard other's that argue that "breaking-in" engines is a thing of the past... you won't hurt it by rev'ing it. They just print that on manuals to cover their a$$es.

My manual said 500 miles for the break in period. Just BC I was parnoid, I didn't bring it over 4K for 1K miles. Ok, I brought it over 4K a few times, but that's it.

Also, I think your "stock" oil is supposed to stay in for a few K.

I'm not sure on cars, but bikes come with a "running-in" oil that needs to be changed after 500 miles for the reason of ridding the particles left behind during the manufacturing process. I would only assume that the same stands for cars.

For breaking in I'm staying under 3500/4000 RPM for the first thousand miles, avoiding any travel at the same RPM for an extended period of time (basically the highway). Just like everybody else, I've redlined it once or twice (or three times) for fun.

When I bought my car the dealer said there was no break-in necessary, but I figured it couldn't hurt. I kept it under 60mph for the first 1000 miles, which was a bit of a pain in the ass cause I wanted to have fun with my new car! I figured that it would be best in the long run, however, just to be patient and go through the break-in. Better safe than sorry, right?

that's not what I mean by "grab." when you change your oil for the first time, particles from manufacture are left in the motor. break in oils (see acl's post) bring more of those particles out when you drain the oil for the first time. synthetics are so good at what they do (lubricating) that particles can remain in the engine. And particles remain in suspension better in a break in oil (which is bad for normal running) so not as many particles even make it to the filter pre- first oil change when you use a non-break in synthetic.

And as far as that link....well, it's a mobil 1 link, self-promotion. They do indeed fill some factory, my mom's saab came mobil 1, but it's NOT the mobil you buy on the shelf. It's a break-in oil, read the owner's manuals to the cars listed on the site.

Hey not to beat a horser here or anything, but I just got off of the phone with the service manager at the local Mazda dealership were the P5 came from last week..

Just for kicks I called to ask if it ships with break in oil, should i have the oil changed, etc, etc....

His answer was no.. It's got regular oil, and not to worry about changing the oil untl 3750 miles.. That's my first scheduled change.


I know that many, many of you change your own oil, and did it the first time. When you did, Did you notice the metal pieces associated with a new engine in your drip pan, etc?

I'm just plain curious now!(scratch)

maybe I should pull out the car ramps that I haven't used in years and just do it myself?
