2010 Speed 3
Aight everyone, lets talk about breaking in the Mazdas. My Speed3 said to not drive hard until after 600 miles. I waited until 900-1000 miles before I started getting aggressive, but hell I haven't hit red line yet. What does everyone think. I am taking it to the mountains on Sunday and want to hear everyones opinion. I have noticed a little drop on the dipstick but that could be normal. Should I have the oil changed sooner than 3000 miles?

I am a believer in hard break in. But that is like abortion and capital punishment, there will never be a consensius in the easy vs hard break in. So I broke my regular 3 in hard.

Until your rings set, your oil level may change. I definitely got my oil changed before 3000. And my oil level is where it was when it was changed, and I am almost due again.

i semi followed the 600 mile break in, i stayed away from redline but still got on it. the car will run like you drive it. i say if your at 1000 miles now dont worry about it, i wouldnt continuously bounce off the rev limiter or stay at redline but your not going to hurt the car taking it up there, youll find you run out of road or safe speeds way before you get to the cars limits

alright now how about frequency of oil changes. I was going for 5k but I am thinking going sooner.

5k (after the initial 1k) is what I'm doing. Unless I autocross it, then maybe a hair sooner.

Nate have you noticed your MS3 using a little oil on the first few 1000 miles. Damn I am paranoid but need to know. I figure the rings are still seating in mine. I am not sched to change oil til 3k.

Id get your first oil change early, I did mine at 2k miles but probably could have gone sooner, second at 5k then 10k and 15k. My car does not burn any oil, they always put about 6qts in and the dip stick reads well above the max line, and wording...

I'm going to do my first oil change in a couple days. I'm at about 1800 miles. I did get on it before 600miles but that's what the warranty is for. As long as you dont beat on it, you will be fine. Good luck.

Sorry Sparky, I didn't notice any oil usage. How is yours doing now?

Break that thing in hard....Change your oil at 1000 and and every 3-5 after that.

Don't be surprised if you lose oil over time with a turbo...I had a turbo DSM for 8 years and was very involved with upgrades/rebuilds on it. What I found was that turbos eat oil over time..whether they have new or old seals. I am not talking about quarts here lol, just saying slight.

I didn't start REALLY getting on it until about 800ish miles. Just got done with my intial 1000 mile oil change with Mobil 1.

In my mind, by this point, it's a no-holds game. However, I will say that I've never even got close to redline yet. It just makes so much power at 3K that my average shift is around 4K to 4.5K. Might have reached 5 on a few occasions but i've never seen a point to go past it.l

I LOVE low TQ numbers...feels a lot better to keep the revs lower and keep from pushing the motor too hard. I feel more reassured of the overall condition of the engine when I keep it out of the strataspheric range.

Agreed, did the same and changed oil at 3k and then at regular 4-5k intervals

If you were in 4th at 2500 rpm and the car fell flat on it's face, you need to have a quite moment with Mazda!!! Your eyes should have been rolling around in your head!!

I have a 2010 M3 S-GT HB 5d and I changed the oil at 2K and pretty much just drove it normally the entire time , nothing excessive nothing to weak or bog-downs which will kill your engine anyway . But after the oil change I went right down HWY 1 towards northern Calif passed Stinson Beach, Bodega Bay , Mendoccino and the reason was that road makes you hit 3rd 4th and 5th gears in the top 3rd of the rpm range so seldom did it drop below 3k rpms it was amazing as the car was not driven like thi before and it flew after it realized what was going on , computer adapted- I could tell then after 2 hours I pulled over left it running to take a photo and it was idoling like it was not even running- I mean it was purring I couldnt hear anything , so I open the hood not even a shutter from that bay . I hopped in and bam that thing launched me to the moon and there was a MARKED difference in the way it responded and drove from that day forward.
