Almost all new cars have a Rev limiter that basically keeps you from blowing up your engine. When your RPM reach a certain level(ours is around 7200), causing the risk of damage, the car has a built in device that forces your RPM to drop back down to a safe level- usually a full loss of power until about 4000 or so. As to the technical specifics of how they work, someone else would have to explain that... no clue-
