Brake failure - totalled my MS3

This is a nice informative thread. I do agree that ABS was not the culprit here - none of the wheels had stopped turning, which is what the ABS looks for.

For track use, I would certainly recommend the Hawk Blues over the HP+. The Blues handle heat better, and are not that hard on rotors. The HP+ is a better autox pad because it works better at lower temps.

I had a Supra TT I tracked for a few years, and sold the car with its original rotors, having used HP+ pads for autoxing and Hawk Blues on the track. The car saw many track days, and time trials at the track, on a track known to be hard on brakes. I did use front brake cooling ducts. I also used Motul 600 fluid, bled the brakes every day, and inspected the pads every track day. The Blues will last many days on most tracks.

It's a good idea to shoot your rotors with an IR gauge to see what temps you're getting to the rotor. Front brake cooling ducts would be worth looking at in our cars, since we can go pretty fast down the straights. If you're seeing rotor temps over 800 F, I'd certainly recommend ducting. Ducting will extend rotor life, pad life and wheel bearing life.

Moral of the story - if you're going to do track days - take the time to make sure your brakes are in order. Y'all be careful out there.

wow! damn glad you are ok. i was being passed by a brand new viper once. the man lost it in turn 11 at thunderhill and clipped the k-rail. the car went straight up, spun upside down in the air and came straight down. he and the passenger was fine. i talked to him later and he said AAA covered the car. i dont have pics, i thought it would have been in bad taste.

are you going to track the new car?

130 in a corner????!!! that is blazing. is the corner banked? and how do you know? you take a peek at the speedo in the corner, or you know your revs and you do the math? i had a passenger, and he told me i did 112 in turn 1 at thunderhill. i was effen nervous. personally, i dont look. i look waaay ahead at the apex and next corner.

track excursions like yours are unfortunate.. glad you walked from it..
although there was one other thing that concerned me in addition to your incident..
the fd owner shuttin down with very little cooldown right after some track runs...

Dude!!!! I didn't pick up the location in your profile, but recognized that as Pacific Raceway s right away. I'm glad you're OK.

Question though. Would the Tech inspection not pick up that inner pad wear?

James

The problem with that type of "track day" is that the tech inspections are personally performed, by the racer. Many places like that don't have the time/money to hire a tech to thoroughly look over each car. Just basic tech.

I believe he stated he had to do his own tech? that's why the best track days are usually club racing, club racers usuallyhave thorough tech inspections, since it's only every member of the club on the track that day :(

i seen the vid awhile ago to man, i wrote off a mazdaspeed3 aswell.....in the end its only a car and your still here man thats all that matters glad your ok

Sorry to go off topic but those are some DOPE ass wheels in your sig picture. (2thumbs)

At least your airbags deployed. Before getting my MS3, I rolled my Ford Explorer SportTrac and they failed to deploy (black ice). But still managed to pull myself out and walk away from it. Insurance covered it -but they are getting their money back!

Disturbing experience, I wish never to repeat. Glad You are Okay!
I have never understood statements like these. If you were able to just walk away from it, there was obviously no need for the airbags to deploy! Engineers go to extreme measures to make sure an airbag doesn't deploy unnecessarily because an errantly deployed airbag can do way more damage than you think. Rolling on black ice doesn't really sound like the sort of collision it would require to need an airbag deployment. It sounds to me like your airbag system in your Ford worked exactly as intended by NOT punching you in the face during a non head-on collision.

Well he said he ROLLED. In a roll, the air bags won't necessarily deploy, every car comes with a driver and passenger airbag these days since like uh, the mid 90s I guess.... airbags to the front won't deplot unless the sensor in the bumper has been hit hard enough.

in a ROLL, unless you're landing on the nose, the airbag really isn't going to deploy. It looked like he hit the front of his ms3 before it flipped and went UP into the air... that would deploy the airbag

I'm assuming his Sport Trac didn't have side door airbags, because usually in a roll, depending how hard the side of the truck impacts the ground, I've seen side airbags deploy, but not front.
