Brake dust

How much brake dust are you all seeing after about a week or so of not washing the car? I have a feeling that whoever owned my car last slapped a pair of really crappy pads on there that give off an incredible amount of dust. I can wash the car and scrub the wheels clean and bring it back into the driveway after taking it around the block and there's already dust spots on the spokes. :( Is it just me or is that more dusty than normal?

what kind of car do you have? i have a 04 6 and the stock pads made an insane amount of brake dust. after switching to hawk hps pads....there is still plenty of dust but not as much.

06 MS6. The thing is my dad's 3 doesn't put out nearly as much dust as mine. I'm assuming it's the weight difference between my car and his.

The two cars have completely different brakes. You have to remember our brakes and rotors are much larger than the mazda 3 and they do give off a lot of brake dust. My guess is you still have the stock pads, which generate a lot of dust.

You may want to consider a ceramic brake pad if the dust bothers you that much.

Yeah mine make a lot of dust too. When I drive during normal DD i try to avoid using too much brake when I dont need to. New pads aren't very expensive so you could always try that or you could invest in some car washing tools. Some proper wheel cleaning supplies can make the job MUCH easier as I found out recently.

+1 on the right tools to make it easier.

Also maybe try the wheel wax. The dust wipes right off with that.

I've got a rag that I dedicate solely to washing my wheels and I wait until after the rest of my car is washed to do my wheels. I just my normal wash solution and it seems to work well even though it's a lot of work. I need to invest in more wheel cleaner since I killed my last bottle :p

Yea my stock pads put out a lot of dust. Having a lip on my rims they looked dirty after a day. I witched to Hawk pads and that cut down a lot on the dust.

+1 i can wash my car and clean my rims to where you eat off of them, i go out for a few hours of spirited driving and they're trashed when i get home. Once the oems wear out i'm going with some ebc greenstuffs and depending on the shape of the rotors i might opt for some slotted stoptechs.

(mswerd) I just got my car and a day after washing it, the rims are almost black.

Stop hitting the brakes :)

I thought about that but it may cause other things that may be much worse than brake dust.....(nailbyt)..

I guess for now I'll just keep cleaning the car. Ordering steelies tonight so should be good for the next 5 months.
