Just like the casino, the house has crunched the numbers and have adjusted the odds to where they almost always win...
Bingo. They sell it to you for only one reason... profit. They don't sell it to protect you, it's entirely for them to make money.

I'm pretty sure lights aren't covered by the extended warranty though.
The way I see it Mazda covers those headlights for 3 years. Get them replaced under warranty.....as a matter of fact inspect the whole car for any defects to have changed. Do these checks it at the 2 year mark.
The aftermarket had matured for Gen1 models past the 3-year warranty now. You can get D.O.T. approved Xenon kits at a fraction of the price for a new OEM. May not get all the features though but it is an alternative. They even have LED D.O.T. approved kits available right now. All that said, Mazda appears to be better than many German companies that refuse to change headlights/housings for a variety of reasons forcing you to pay out of pocket.

Yeah, I don't believe they're covered. And that would largely be one of the only attractive reasons to get one... to cover the replacement cost of those expensive headlights!
Yes, there is a huge headlight aftermarket. But I challenge your statement about ANY of them being D.O.T. approved. Very doubtful that this can be substantiated.
Perhaps I'm picking nits, but I'm pretty sure this is disinformation.
Check the link I posted. The item descriptions of all those listed are D.O.T. approved. Check the pics, they zoom in to show D.O.T. approved stamping as well. D.O.T. being a federal department, pretty sure it would be easy to put a stop sale warning on these vendors.
