boost levels

hey guys,

could you please share your knowledge regarding boost levels, more specifically what psi range is normal, what is below-average (i.e. car potentially needs to be tuned), and what is above-average (i.e. engine is in danger).

I recently ordered a prosport electronic boost gauge, cpe pod, cpe TIP, and SU boost tubes. have not owned a boost gauge prior to this so it would be cool if I could understand what I am reading.

I already have a CAI and BPV installed, so I think I should be seeing some pretty decent power gains once the TIP is in.

thx

Boost should be right around 16 PSI and tapper to about 12 at redline.
Just my .02 should have gotten a mechanical gauge. I just dont like
electrical. :/

Also that 16 (15.6) is when you are in a higher gear like 4-6th (I think it's slightly limited in 3rd still).

hate to change the subject a bet but if you are in neutral and you reline tell it somewhat two steps how much psi should u get???

WTF would you ring it off the limiter in neutral for? That's incredibly destructive. Anyway, you should see virtually 0 since there's no load.

well in neutral im getting over 10 psi since i know thats a prob then what is the problem that i need to fix

Goddamn, what a pinner this turbo is if it's producing boost to 10 psi on an idle rev shot. Amazing.

Seriously, though, free reving the engine to the limiter like that is really asking for it.

Theoretically the turbo should build no boost if the car is in neutral, as there is no load. If it is showing some boost, it probably should not be more than a couple pounds.

If, you are free reving the thing up to the rev limiter, like Darth says, you are asking for trouble as far as general engine health is concerned.

Theoretically (I ain't gonna test out this theory), given the small snail size on this turbo, revving it to redline might flow enough exhaust through the impeller side to produce 10 psi of boost on the compressor side due to internal restrictions in air flow inside the snail actually creating their own "load." Just a theory.

In reality, don't try to measure boost in neutral. It's meaningless and potentially harmful.

I need your (everyone) help I installed PG turbo upgrade, I been driving it for two months it feels slower and the PSI 12.9 was the max. I been looking for any loose hose or clamps but I look everything in place. Can the turbo leak air or anywhere else? I'm crazy with this help me please!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like you're on WG spring pressure only. To test, get a bicycle pump with a gauge hook up a hose to the WGA nipple, cap the smaller nipple going to the boost control solenoid, stick a fitting for a fitness ball on it and see if it holds pressure and moves the WG rod.
