There's a TSB about the modules going bad on certain first gens. The module in my 2013 went bad, and when I priced it out, it was cheaper to get an aftermarket Kenwood with Android Auto.
A real scan tool with Mazda software can interface with the audio system and read any codes it may be throwing. (This is how I figured out about the BT module TSB.) Mazda specific codes like the ones for the audio system can't be read by cheap code readers, and most of those Mazda specific codes won't throw a MIL letting you know something is wrong, either.
