Blown Engine Rebuild

How would they know it was going to blow? I'd be more inclined to believe they got cold feet and decided to quit while they were ahead. Knowing an engine is going to blow while it's still running fine would be a neat trick.

Agreed. I mean, I don't expect a stock block running 20 PSI to last more than 5 minutes in most cases. The point I was trying to make is that their good tuning made it so that their MS3 could be street driven for over 5,000 plus miles without any problems. And it made 420+ WHP.

It appears my ecu was corrupted by my ap. STFT's are pegged at 25 with a super lean idle. Jeff G. was able to correct this with his standback, and it ran great. So, I need to get the ecu wiped and reflashed. I can't help but think that the ecu may have failed just before my engine blew....but who knows at this point. Hopefully this will be the final fix!

man while you had everything all apart you shouldve sent the intake mani out for powdercoating, put the ptp gasket in and did the collant bypass. looks sick though!!!

Looks great, can't wait to hear/see the fire up video! Should be mental from a roll. I can barely keep the front wheels pointed straight with just flow mods. (drive2)

whats the break in procedure for something like this... just treat it like a brand new car (5k break-in, being sure to go through all the gear regularly, etc etc)?

are you going to get a protune as soon as you can?

new oil, ran it 30 min. changed oil and filter. will drive for 1000 miles with no boost, change oil and filter, and then beat on it. Boost will be limited to 13psi on wastegate, so will drive it like that for a while, hard, then manual boost controller to control boost and pro tune. It was highly recommended that I don't let the ap control boost anymore. will probably set around 20psi and tune for it. The boost controller won't let it spike anymore, or let the ap "interpret" what boost levels should be. should be a safer bet. btw, exhaust sounds friggin cool. it doesn't have that pseudo subaru sound anymore, but it's badass and an entirely different animal!

Sounds like it will be a beast when all is said and done.

Speaking on the topic of boost control, I agree. I do not like the whole "load based" tuning.

Lol. Finally, someone who feels the same way I do! Wisdom rears it's ugly head in this quote.

Yes. this is sooo true. Even the guy at surgeline told me this. I said I wanted a conservative custom tune for my mods at stock boost so that my motor would have less chance of blowing. He basically said that the best way to prevent it was to leave it stock. Even Conservative bolt ons can cause this. Hopefully Im pretty safe.

uhoh for me. lol.

Getting my car back from the dealer in a little bit (thanks Ken!!) More to follow. Initial reports are.....it's awesome.

Game Time

Ok, so I have about 1000 miles on the new motor and decided to hook up the wastegate sol. Without it, I was getting 9psi of boost using the upper i/c pipe as the vac source. OMFG! First of all, the new turbo sounds like a jet engine. Spool sound completely drowns out all engine sound...in a good way. Boost comes on ridiculous fast, so fast in fact that I have blown couplers off of my i/c twice (the most recent was on the way to work this morning. had to pull off immediately into the lot of a small mechanic shop, where they were staring at my car like it was the strangest thing they have ever seen. My tech had to drive tools down to me so we could get the bumper off to get the coupler back on!) The Cobb tune is definitely not ideal for this set up, because the load map is for a K04 and not a GT2871, so boost comes on a little too fast. I haven't gone wot, but have done short bursts at light throttle, hitting about 17psi. wot should hit about 21. I really wasn't prepared for how hard this car pushed me into the seat, or the sounds it made while doing it! Man, it f'n rips! I will plan on a protune shortly down the road after getting AP back from Cobb and put a few more miles on it before it is subjected to hard dyno runs.

I have to give a big thanks to a few people for lending a hand with this rebuild. First of all, Ken M. (PG) for sourcing the parts and coming to the shop a handlful of times to troubleshoot and getting my engine timed. Thanks to Jeff G for coming to the shop and lending me his standback to troubleshoot as well as lots of phone support! And of course Steve, my technician at the shop for being a kick ass engine builder, teaching me a ton of stuff about building engines, as well as pulling a favor for some sick head work at Don's Machine Shop. It has been expensive as hell, but a great learning experience and one hell of a ride!
