Big SPL Systems

Has anyone on here got a big SPL system installed in their P5? I'm about to undertake the installation of my new system and i was to see what you've all done!

I've got waiting to be installed...

Kicker S15 L74 (square 15" sub)
MTX 6500D Amp for the Sub (775wrms rated)
1 Farad Cap... 1/0 awg power wiring
Boston Acoustics 5 x 7" Rally Splits
MTX 4244 Amp for the Splits
JVC SH909R - HU

My dilemma is whether to build a small 1.5 - 2 Cubic ft box and save weight and boot space or go all out and build a 3 cu ft slot ported box for the big spl numbers and have no boot at all!

Who's done what?

With only the 750watts rms from the 6500 you would be best with the port. If you could afford more power then I think the sealed would be better but were talking 1200 rms and up.

Also what impedace is the sub. I believe the 6500 needs a 2 ohm load to put out that power.

I would suggest 2 caps.

The sub is dual 4 ohm voice coils so i'd be wiring the amp up to see a 2 ohm load which is where it makes it's power. In a few tests i've seen it make anywhere between 850 and 950wrms and 14.4V! Plenty of grunt i'd say!

Also, i've always read and gone by the creed that you should have 1 farad of cap per 1000Wrms of amp power. I think it would be a waste of money buying two caps seeing that its a class D design amp and only draws 75amps at full tilt...

If an amp can draw 75 amps, and as of yet no amp is more then 60% efficient then only half of that power is useful. 75 amps*14.4 volts = 1080 watts. divide this in half for effiecientcy sake and the amp will only put out 650 watts rms.

Thus it either draws more then 75 amps or it isn't that powerful. Also there isn't a stock charging system made that will maintain 14.4 volts when under a 75+ amp draw. I have a 200 amp alternator with 2 caps and it will still drop to 12 at high draws from my Jl 1001. With our small stock alternator 2 caps are better. The basic rule rule of 1 farad per 1000 watts wasn't ment for compact cars like our, a montecarlo sure, not us.

My rule is if the stock alternator provides under 100 amps then 1 farad per 500 watts rms is needed. With a stock alternator over 100 amps then 1 farad per 1000 watts rms is fine.

The MTX are best at 2 ohm loads.

I have a set up in my MP5. I have two Power Accoustic MOFO12's (1200 watts RMS a piece, dual 2ohm voice coils) in a ported box. The box takes up pretty much the whole trunk. I have the Kenwood CD, CDR-W, MP3 player w/69 different color illuminations. The amp I have is a Planet Audio 850 watt RMS digital mono amp stable down to .25 ohms. It's running @ 2 ohms right now and it thumps VERY HARD!!! I am going to upgrade to the 1200 watt RMS model soonand run it @ 1ohm. That should be a monster! I didn't do it myself but they did a great job on the install. The only thing I have to worry about now is the rattle from the trunk (spoiler and liscence plate frame). But other than that, no problems. I plan on getting a capacitor soon. 6x9's are in the near future and other than replacing the stock speakers with much better ones, not much else. Just letting you know what I had done and what I am going to do. Good luck with yours...

Get to the speed limit as fast as you can!!! Anything faster...that's on you. (silverp5) (beer) :flip: :wtf: (piss) (scratch) (smoke)
