Big Brakes for CHEAP!

ive been told by a mx6 buddy of mine that the rears just need a custom bracket. idk how true this is. ill post when i see his finished results

Has anyone figured out a bolt on upgrade for the rear yet....with or with the e-brake???
Even if you can't bolt on the mz6/ms6 rears maybe the rear mz3/ms3 ones will work as via option

Front this thread: Brakes will fit, the E-brake cable won't. Maybe boostdprotegelx have found a solution for this yet?

I for one will not touch the front brakes if I can't do the rear ones.
Wagon: I know you dissagree with me on this, but the rear brakes of the MSP aren't good at all.
(But you got to remember that before the MSP I was used to cars made to europpean ECE specs. I complained about the rear brakes to two different dealers in USA and they both told me they were in spec, one even told me they were in excellent condition. Then I got home and the rear brakes flunked the first inspection here.)

What is the issue that inspection brings up for not passing your rear brakes ?

In US they don't check the brakes as much as just a quick test of the stopping capability which is measured by the length it takes to stop the car (low speed test)

Did you get a USDM MSP or . .... ?

what are you basing this statement on?

Comparison with other cars I have driven, I have have lost count by now, but that number has 3 figures.
... And that fact that just 3000 miles after a US dealer said that my brakes was in excellent condition they failed the first inspection here, so bad that I had to fix them or lose my plates. The rear brakes on the 92 626 I had before and my parents Mercedes A200CDI have both far more grip than my MSP.

But to be fair, other DOT cars I have driven have as bad or even wors e-brake than my MSP had.

EDIT: I forgot, if the information I have found on the MSP brakes are correct, they actually have europpean specs - good enough for a 101hp engine.

Ebrake and rear brakes are completely different... as long as my e brake stops the car from rolling when parked, I could give a damn... if your beef is with the ebrake, its likely improperly adjusted anyway.

As long as they use the same caliper and rotors they are not that different. Not that it matters much but here is the list I got presented after the inspection:
Headlights need adjusting (Minor)
Front brakes: too much rust on inside of both rotors, uneven rotor drivers side
Brake bias: too front biased
Rear brakes: too weak, worn out pads, passenger side biased.
e-brake: too weak, passenger side biased, too long wandering of the e-brake handle (Sorry I don't know the english technical term for that)

After new rotors and pads it passed, but is still rather front biased.

IMO: The E brake is the car's emergency brakes, it should be able to do more than just keep it from rolling when parked.

engine braking is far more effective than an E-brake ever will be. safer too. if you lock up the rear brakes in a situation that is already an emergency... you're screwed.

front biased brakes are because the fronts do the majority of the work. I have done a few emergency stop tests in my car, and the fronts always lock first, which is exactly how I want it... I don't want the rears to lock. because if the rears lock under heavy braking guess what... you're swapping ends, and will likely soon after find yourself in a ditch or worse.

lol do you guys really think that a 1 1/2" brake upgrade is going to upset the "brake bias ballance"? Maybe if you had 10" drums in the rear and actually drove the car hard enough to notice.

this is an awesome cheap upgrade.

I hope to do it soon.

thanks for all the great pics and info posted!

apparently you underestimate the significance of the brake upgrade, however I agree with you that upgrading the front brakes will not upset the balance in such a way that upgrading the rears is necessary to maintain balance. The rears do such a minor percentage of the work that upgrading them is marginally pointless for anything but asthetic reasons.

so ive done some research on this topic and found that i could get all parts needed to upgrade to mazdaspeed 6 front brakes for $520 shipped.which im going to do.just wondering if anyone would be interested in such a deal also pm me if interested not a vendor just trying to help fellow owners out on a great deal i would be making $0 on this deal its my cost..

Here are photo to show that the brake swap will fit, sorry for making them so big.

hmmm that looks pretty good there. with the cost of after market slotted rotors maybe i could just get these instead...

thanks anyway but ive already purchased all the brake parts BRAND new. its half the price to buy what u have there but i would never put used brake parts on my vehicle.plus i got the mazdaspeed 6 parts instead of the reg 6

Okay, just ordered my ms6 calipers today so ill buy the rotora drilled and slotted rotors when I get em.

so do you think this would fit with the stock 16" ES wheels then? i have my winter tires mounted to them and i cant afford a new set of wheels and tires
I dont know what the offset of factory ES wheels are, MS6 will not fit 16" wheels

i would like to do front and back. and them be ms6 ;) ill come up with something for the ebrake cables.

also where are you all finding ms6 calipers and brakets at? and how much do they cost?
