Better mileage in minutes

I recently checked in at my dealer for minor issues when I asked him if My MPG's will get better soon. He then reset the average MPG's by pressing and holding on the button on the steering wheel. I have tried resetting the number by going to the settings and changing it on my seven inch screen. By the time I returned home, my average MPG's was significantly better. If you are disappointed in your MPG's, you might try resetting the number using the button on your steering wheel. I guess my next move is to calculate the gas mileage by doing the math.

I reset it every time I fill up, so I know what I'm getting on each tank. It is a little better if you reset it while rolling rather than stopped. Otherwise, that initial acceleration getting back up to speed would be the first thing it records.

I also track my gas mileage using the Gas Cubby app for the iPhone, every time I fuel up. I tried out the Fuelly/Gas Tracker app that some users here use, but it was really glitchy and I've always used Gas Cubby since I had my Tribute, so that's what I've stuck with.

For what it's worth, in my 2.5L AWD I've averaged about 26 mpg in about 9 months of ownership with probably a 60% city/40% highway split. Highway driving, I can average about 30-31 mpg a trip on mostly flat roads here in Virginia. Highway trips to our new digs in West Virginia have been less because it's so mountainous, about 27-28 mpg. I was averaging maybe 19-20 mpg in mixed driving in the Tribute, so I'm very happy.

So you just found the middle third position for resting on the INFO rocker switch? :)

I believe there is a way to link one of our trip odometer to the average MPG display so that you reset one, it also reset the other simultaneously. Or am I getting up too early?

That is possible. I think you have to go into the info menu options while the car is stationary, but powered on. I think it's under the reset averages menu.

Also, you do not need to reset the average MPG while the vehicle is rolling. Yes, the MPG will start low because you're using more gas in city traffic after you fill up, but that's the point of an average, to average out your actual MPG, not to make you feel good about the number there.

I guess that is what the service attendant did. I wonder why the difference - why did I get better gas mileage by using the button on the steering wheel and less gas mileage using the settings on the screen?

Im not sure I understand the title of your post. Resetting the average doesn't improve your mileage. By resetting it you have cleared the previous values, your average is more accurate over a larger set of data points. You are getting the same mileage, your car just had fewer data points to average. If you reset it and drive downhill your avg will be higher than if you reset it and drive uphill. But your average for the cycle will be the mean of those two values. Nothing changed about your vehicle.

Your comments all make sense; nevertheless, I have reset the mpg figure a number of times on the settings screen and have not seen any change. The service attendant using the button on the steering wheel appeared to have made a significant change in the gas mileage. I am at a loss as to why. There was not any difference in the topography. I can only speculate that there is a bug in the software of my 2016 vehicle.

Maybe you are driving more conservatively since you purchased the car? Maybe your tire pressure was low? Maybe your region just switched to summer fuel? Maybe traffic is lighter? There are literally dozens of variables. I suggest you fill up and reset your trip meter and calculate it yourself. Try to fill up at the same pump as there may be slight calibration variances between pumps.

I already have an app that I will be using ,but I don't think it was a coincidence that the Service attendant reset the MPG's a different way causing a more reliable number. The difference was noticeable within minutes.

So what button is being pushed to reset the gas mileage on the wheel? I'm confused here.

Like it was said, the "INFO" rocker switch on the left of steering wheel. The one you go through current MPG, average MPG, average speed, and distance to refill displayed on the right instrument cluster.

Umm I had no idea that the center of that button could be pushed. I thought it just toggled up and down. You can also go it to the apps section where it says mileage data or whatever it is and set it to reset mpg with the trip A resest button.

But like the other poster said, resetting the data points does not mean you're getting better mpg. Just means it's averaging less points. Try resetting it and then driving like your running for your life during a zombie apocalypse and I bet your mpg will suck. Reset again and drive like 90 year old on Sunday and I bet it would be fantastic. Until you start driving again and it averages out that is.
