As long as my motor is out, I'm trying to get everything cleaned up and get a coat of engine enamel on most of the parts. I'm a little unsure of the best way to get the transmission cleaned off without getting water or degreaser where it's not supposed to go.

My best thought so far is to set the transmission vertically with the bellhousing facing down, place waterproof tape over the axle holes, and then just use cleaner/degreaser along with scrubbing and GENTLE rinsing. Any other suggestions?

brake cleaner. i used that when i tore my tranny apart to clean all the gunk and man did it work. of course you ahve to scrub but it got all that black crap out. make sure you let it dry though or wipe it all off

I'm trying to clean it off without taking the whole thing apart though... my car has been out of service for too long for me to take on a transmission rebuild now. haha

oh. hahah well id still use it on the outside. you could try getting a little mist bottle and spraying it on the parts you want to clean. fill it with water or whatever u wanna use to break up the grease or dirt. then scrub away.

yup you could always spray some degreaser, then wipe it off with a damp rag or towel. After that i would go over it with a dry rag.

or brake clean. That stuff rocks!

So is there anything else I'd want to be worried about, other than making sure the axle holes are covered with something waterproof?

I would recommend to Spray some brake cleaner on it, and let it drain into an oil drain pan for some time. The loose stuff will come off and run into the pan.

or wait till you have to put new gears and lsd in and the shop has to clean the case anyways.
