Best Intake for the Money?

Ive had my P5 for about a week now. I just got it and i love it. the only thing i have an issue w/ is the slight lack of power and skinny ass tires that come stock. I am looking for an intake for now, just a little somthin to get a little more twist outa the engine. What is the best for the P5?? If anyone can help it would be sweet. Also, if there is anyone here from the Detroit area....let me know. Im right outside of det.

check out (page 3) theard it got o pix of a cheap way get some power by just taking out the stock filter boxes and buy a cone filter for $30and put it on, only mod is to drill hole for sensor, it sounds pretty good and when you turn off your car makes a cool noise!

the best would to have a cold air injen intake system with bypass.if you got the money? and make your payments

E.NoE, hello and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to our Club. There are TWO BIG fridge'S in the corner with anything you can think of in them...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have.

make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!!

as for the BEST intake? well that is a subject of much debate....however.....any and all of the intakes on the market will give you a lot better throttle response...and that is where you will truely be able to feel the difference.....if LOOKS are an added PLUS in your book.....definately get the INJEN CAI.....I did....I love it....it is IMO the beat looking intake on the market....as for the BYPASS for it....don't bother....its a total waste of money, if you needed one...INJEN would make one for their intake....and they don't.

if you want to spend some money on it, ,then the INJEN, if you don't care to drop some cash, just go to autozone and buy an APC conefilter and replace the stock box with it, and put an "L" bracket for support. I just left my airtemp sensor hanging right underneath the filter.

jared's right do what we did hehe

do not just allow your air temp sensor to hang there in the engine compartment....its there for a reason...and its not to tell you what your engine compartment temp is...its to give input into your computer for your engine management system.

and if you are going to just put a cone on the end of the MAF...or even use one of the short ram intakes....do yourself a favor and remove all of your stock intake system...it looks a LOT cleaner when you open your hood.

but then....if you don't care what it looks like when you lift the hood......just rig it up anyway you want. it may work....but...

Personally I care what it looks like as well as how it performs.

i too have a 2003 super white MP5. i installed a short ram intake from meganracing.com and a mazdaspeed exhaust. intake cost about $60 and pretty easy to install. take a look...welcome to the p5 family...ALOHA..

I know.. I'm just doing this temporarily till I get enough cash for it hehe and the purpose I left the buttom part of the airbox so that it will still get air from outside (im pretty sure it will suck air still even a bit right?) hehe oh and one thing do you really think there's a huge difference in using an aluminum tube vs the stock tube besides looks? (for short ram that is) I don't think they do make a difference. My VW's intakes are only filters with heatshields and yes aluminum tube is available but really they don't give any performance points. So stock tube with a cone filter is equivalent to the short ram intakes.

what does changing out the intake do to the warrenty on the car? also, how easy are they to install? i have pretty much no experience working on a car, but im curious as to whether i could install one of these on my car.
thanks.

also, do you have to buy a different one for an automatic?

it does NOTHING to the warrantee of your car....

if you like...read up on the Magnuson Moss warrantee act.....

the ONLY time you would have a problem is if some part of the intake YOU installed failed...and caused another problem..

as for ease of install.....if you can operate a screw driver...you can install an intake.

Im not sure about the warrenty but some dealers void it just because of the intake... but others don't mind... i had experience this on my vw... the mechanic said they have to void it good thing the other mechanic was an ethusiast so he backed me up. Installing is a breeze for this things its like playing lego hehe. Oh yeah I have the auto sport (so its automatic) but it sure sound like a manual on manual mode hehe

auto and manual tranny's have the same intake. so no difference.

It isn't just dangling. I have it ziptied right up next to the filter. I wouldn't think there is enough temp. difference between the outside and inside of the filter. Maybe if it was hanging down somewhere close to the tranny.

I did that to see what it would do. hmm...but someone told me it's not a good idea cuz you have to hve a certain amount of backpressure. True or no?

I got an eBay intake and I'm pleased with it. Good value for the money.

I only paid $55 including shipping!

The only problem is that some times it touches the master cylinder brake under acceleration, but only in first gear.

Good news is, if you replace the front engine mount with the MazdaSpeed unit, the touching will go away!

That's a loooooong way to go for no touching...:D

I was looking at the eBay intakes too....but I like how the Injen takes the filter all the way to the fresh air....meh...I'll leave it rigged and get the Injen laters...

Here's the one I liked the best, Humvee. It has a real K&N Filter with it.

It doesn't have a reserve and there are plenty of them. It shows one quantity, but these guys have more. They do qty 1 auctions because they are trying to create their own little market for people to get into bidding wars over.

I found it by just doing a search on "Protege air intake".

this is where you are WRONG....the intakes are NOT the same...at least the aftermarket ones are not the same...if you get the intake for a manual tranny...the tubing will hit on the break master cylinder...for the are NOT in the exact same spot on manual and autos.....

so....if you have an auto tranny....you better shop around and get the intake for the auto...or you are not going to be a happy camper when the master cylinder rubbs a hole in your brand new intake which has happened to quite a few people that didn't know any better.

(stash)......
