Just want to see what you guys think are the best upgrades for a N/A engine. Cost, performance, ease of installation, and driveability are all important factors.

intake and exhaust combo comes immediately to mind, and is the usual first step for most people from what i have seen. short shifter, header, perhaps an underdrive pulley (though there is much debate on this mod it seems).

i take it from your post that you want to stick with NA. going away from just the engine, springs, struts, sway bar are all worthy upgrades to the car.

shameless self plug here :) you can find most of what you are looking for by clicking my banner below ;)

intake and cat back exhaust for sure. then there's the header option from a few companies now. and beyond that, you're basically done in terms of ease of installation and driveability. getting into cams and cam gears require tuning as well as their costs are astronomical compared to the other bolt ons.

intake and exhaust is good.. but its always better to do intake exhaust header.. that way everything is free flowing.. if smog is an issue where you are at you may want to do some research..
i was planning on doing a underdrive pulley because i already have intake exhaust but no header.. i live in comunist california where u cant do anything to ur car.
good luck with what ever u do.. the vendors on this site are great .. and even if you feel your question is stupid.. they will kindly answer it -=P

power per dollar ratio kicks in heavy here once you move into this territory. its generally considered that you get much more power per dollar by going turbo over going with an NA setup.

but if you aren't thinking of going that nuts, than anything above listed works well.

a good setup i am going for.. and in this order performance wise is..
intake (cai or sri both do about the same)
cat back exhaust
kartboy exhaust hangers -=P

then coming
unorthodox pulley
cams
header
02 mil fix..
ticket for not being smog complaint
yay

no 1. header (awr etc)
no 2. rest of exhaust esp high flow cat
no 3. intake

the rest are bigger work like flywheel, cams etc

fyi - once the exhaust is done, think about getting a much larger exhaust cam (ie 250deg duration @ valve seat and 8.7mm of lift and you'll be pleasantly suprised!)

Hey! What about the MP3 / MP5 ECU swap? Good value/performance?
if you can find someone with an mp3 (or a wrecked mp3) willing to swap or sell for a good price, then yes. buy it from a dealer (over $1000) then no.

yeah right, wheres your NOS sticker, that adds 50hp and a b**** in your passanger seat yo!

I was thinking about adding a racing stripe and probably an LED glowing exhaust tip. After that, I'd like to get some plastic spinning covers for my wheels. By the end of the summer, I hope to have Type R stickers (I can't afford the GT-R stickers, sorry KYMP5), a HUGE spoiler to give me some nice downforce in the back of my front wheel drive car, and probably some neons ziptied to my A-pillars. I was thinking i'd get about 240 wheel rice power with all of that stuff. Maybe AutoZone will extend my sponsorship if I make it onto 3Fast3Furious. lol

In all seriousness, though, thanks for all the advice you have given so far. I would love to get a turbo (mmmm...hiboost) but I'm not sure if I can drop that kind of money. Sticking with a N/A setup allows me to upgrade part by part.
