Batteries all the info website

Timely thread. Lot's there at that link, have not dug in yet. I have been down with a chest cold the last three days. Outside of bed I was researching about batteries. My 2023 Turbo sig has 1500 miles on it. It does not get driven in winter, only warmed up intermittently, and is on a battery maintainer.

The other vehicles in the fleet get a new battery after 5 years- regardless of how they check out. Whatever my independant mechanic puts in there as we have a good relationship. I have to fight them every time because they tell me it checks out, and I do not need one.

Well, I got stranded once a long time ago, and I'm not doing that again.

Battery replacement estimates seem to be all over the map, but since I have been replacing them every 5 years I have never had an issue- I do not want an issue and this is a normal cost of car ownership.

Good resource.

Modern cars are much harder on batteries that the old days. Everything is controlled and dependent on getting good 12V and solid Amperage.

Those of us with iStop get to pay extra for EFB batteries or in some countries AGM’s. Oh goody!

A mate who is a retired mechanic told me a interesting story a couple of years ago. A friend’s daughter had a fairly new BMW but just out of warranty. The young lady went overseas for 3 months, and not knowing any better, didn’t leave the battery connected to a smart charger to keep it in charged up. Of course on her return - flat battery. Got the car jumped by the auto club.

But soon afterwards she reported problems with the auto gearbox, changing erratically, getting stuck in gear etc. So off she goes to BMW dealer who calls her later that day and says bad news- gearbox is stuffed, its going to be like $20k to get a new one installed.

Her Dad rings my mate who says bring it around I will have a look. He asks her questions about the lead up to the problems and she tells him about the OS trip and flat battery, and jump start when she got home. He asks - did the BMW dealer ask you about that? Nope.

He goes to the local battery shop, buys the correct new battery, charges it up and installs it.

Gearbox problems resolved. Her Dad rips a new a-hole in the BMW dealer’s service advisor who didnt ask the questions they should have and nearly cost his daughter $20k unnecessarily - which wouldn’t have solved the problem anyway!
