Basic oil change question????

I have a question as far as oil filters. Its time to change the oil on my mazda 3 2.0L but can't find a filter for it. I know FRAM is no good. but i can't find a filter period. was told that for the 1st yr usually you can't find a fitting filter other than from mazda.. I've called Mazda and they say there aren't any filters out there. Can anyone tell me if there are any? I've seen the list but is that only for the mazda 6?

ok I'l try and speed you up to where we are...the 2.3 has a cartridge setup and 2.0 doesn't. 2.3 owners are doing the conversion over from the cartridge setup to the 2.0 setup. the filters listed at bottom of page 1 and starting top of page 2 are the filters that will fit the 2.0 and 2.3 that did the 2.0 oil filtration system swap.

I've been Frammed

Well crap. (headshake This is her husband. I got the oil changed yesterday and they threw a FRAM double-guard filter on it. Now I find out the DG shoots teflon into the engine. How much of an emergency is this? The filter is a 3614 which is listed in the cross reference as the replacement for the filters listed on this page.
So should I be worried? Should I just replace the filter with a Mazda filter?

Btw goldwing, we updated our X-ref list for the spin-on. (6i conversion)

Here ya go for future reference.
Mazda LF10-14-302
Purolator L10241
AC Delco PF46 or PF53
Fram PH3600 (This is just for other X-refs..don't get the fram!!! ug)
Motorcraft FL793
NAPA 1348
K&N HP-1002

The 3614 Fram is for the Protege 2.0L. It's about a half-inch shorter than the correct filter.

There are a few aftermarket filters out there but the Mazda ones are inexpensive enough to stick with OEM.

yeah for those still using the cartridge..the filters are mazda only and after orings and tax it's alround $12

dealership is where you get the new part...see thread on 1st page for part#s(I REPEAT TAKE THE PART#"S WITH YOU OR PARTS DEPT WILL TAKE 45 MINS TO FIND IT THEMSELVES!)

Yep I, just bought the spin on adapter. It was $54. The gasket was like $3 and I will source my own oil filter.

Note, the filter mount part number changed, the last 3 digits are now 311.

$30-$50 is a best guess..try going to mazdastuff.com and email them those parts #s and see what they come up with.

I finally got around to switching the housings over today. Pretty straight forward. I used the how to on 6tech as a reference. The drain plug for the cartridge I found was a 6mm hex instead of a 6.5mm. Other than that everything else was the same as that how-to. I also installed a Fram Sure Drain (SD-2) to make things a little faster for my next oil change.

They're all quite pricey. The Mazda filter cost me nearly $7.50 at the dealer. Cheapest I've found online is $5.50 (with minimum $6 shipping cost). All the cross-listed filters I found cost around $5.50 as well. I've definitely seen cheaper OEM filters (I'm thinking Honda and Toyota as examples).

BTW, I think Bosch makes oil filters as well for the Mazda 3 (so Advance Auto Parts claims). Wonder if they are any good. Bosch is usually a good brand for other auto parts.

I rather pay more to not see the parts dept...thats just me :)

I got my OEM filters for $5.99 each. It's no $1.99 pos from the local auto parts supermarket but I'd like to think it's a better filter than some. Six bucks every 5,000 miles isn't going to kill me. :)

One thing to remember is IF you crack the plastic housing for the oil filter and seize the engine Mazda WILL Not pay for it. Trust me on this, I've done 2 so far.

You've seized two engines or cracked two housings?

I've replaced 2 motors because people did their oil change themselves and cracked the housings, and seized the motors. Not that I'm complaining, the 4 bangers are wicked easy to remove and install and pay pretty damn good.

Mazda actually has a TSB saying that their not going to be paying for motors because of the cracked housing under any circumstances.
