Bad input shaft bearing?

Well lets start by saying ever since i have owned my 03.5 msp these forums have been an incredible help. What you guys and girls do on here is amazing as well as the knowledge being endless. Now, since shortly after i bought my car about 2 years ago i slowly developed a problem at idle. With clutch out it has a bearing sound coming from the trans. If i push clutch in, noise slows until it stops. I have already had the clutch changed last summer with throwout when i had my engine forged. So i dont believe the problem lies with the throwout. Im leaning maybe towards input shaft bearing? I have removed the trans already but am having a hard time finding diagnostics/ and or removal procedures for changing this bearing myself. Most are only diagrams of parts but no procedures. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction? Itd be greatly
Appreciated. Thanks, joe

Try putting some grease on the ball were the clutch slave cylinder pushes on the clutch fork (very easy to get at btw). I had this awful squeel with the clutch released and that's all it was.

Definitely something in the gearbox, some bearing on the input shaft makes perfect sense (whether it be the clutch bearing or anything in the 1st or 2nd gearbox shafts.

When you first push in the clutch does the sound get a little louder? (when you load up the clutch throw out bearing) if you can remember that, I have seen throwout bearings go very quickly... idk why/how maybe just a hair off center or something? but definitely don't rule that out.

Since you have it out already, take the throw out bearing, and affix it on a table, so that you can put a weight on the top of the bearing, and spin it, if it growls at all; that could be your problem.

Otherwise if that is not it, its inside the gearbox, might be easiest to just replace the whole sha-bang.

Thx for the input so far. I dont know tons about transmissions , however the throwout seems okay. Is th end of it just supposed to pull off though lol? It popped right back on but it just doesnt seem too sturdy. If the best course of action is replacement of trans, whats the best route? Regular 5 spd trans and install mfactory lsd with new speedo gear? I noticed a used regular trans is a lot cheaper. I may sound stupid here, but i just want to make sure it gets done right. I have a fair amount of money invested so far and i just want to do everything right. Thanks again .

Check the pilot bearing. It is in the center of the flywheel. Every clutch kit i have installed came with the clutch disc, pressure plate, pilot bearing and release bearing. Usually the noise you are describing is from a bad pilot bearing. Remove the flywheel and use a socket to knock out the old bearing. Make sure you install the new bearing at the same depth (Flush with flywheel) and inspect the old one. Install the flywheel with lock-tite and torque bolts to specification in a star pattern...

It sounds like your ISB (input shaft bearing). If the clutch pedal is down and it makes noise, it's usually the throwout bearing. With the clutch pedal up, a common cause is the ISB. If it's not terribly loud you can probably drive on it for a while, but you risk damaging other components in your transmission. I'd change it out or source a replacement transmission soon

...With clutch out it has a bearing sound coming from the trans. If i push clutch in, noise slows until it stops. ...

if the noise slows then stops when you push the clutch pedal down, my guess would be internal to the transmission. when you push the clutch pedal in, the transmission disconnects from the engine, and will go from spinning with the engine, to slowing down to a stop. if the sound stops when you push the pedal in, its likely coming from the transmission.

rebuilding your tranny with new bearings shouldn't be too hard for any transmission shop. if you can drop it yourself, and take it in bare, you can save some cost. you will likely get a better end product, as opposed to buying a used tranny.
