Axle-back exhaust removal?

Anyone driving without an axle-back? I'd like to hear the car more, plus any weight removed is a bonus (until I can pony up for a completely upgraded system). The angle at which the exhaust is routed concerns me, as it will aim the exhaust straight above the rear axle into the chassis. Also, how's the sound (too loud for street, obnoxiously raspy, etc)? I'm deciding whether or not to pull it off before this saturday's event.

My free time is limted, so I'd rather not take it off just to find out I don't like it and have to put it back on.

Thanks for putting up the link! That actually sounds decent. Always hard to tell how loud, or intrusive into the cabin from a video. I may try it, and if I like it maybe have a straight pipe made with another flange so I have the option of easily swapping the stock peice back in.

I did it and it sounded amazing. Not raspy at all, just too loud for anything but short trips.

Definately would not mess up back pressure removing the muffler.

NGD298 - I had a feeling it would be too loud for day-to-day stuff. I just bought a $37 straight through muffler with 2" ID from ebay I'll use. Looks a little ricey with the flame tip and all but it includes a silencer so I can quiet it down for road trips if needed.

I'll probably do the civic tie bar soon as well. This'll be the first car I've gone this cheap (on new parts) on mods. Down the road I'll probably get the corksport or similar setup for a full exhaust.

I have the Civic tie bar and it works great, well worth the $30. I have the Racing Beat axleback exhaust and i love it, just the right amount of noise...should sound even better once i get my CS intake installed.

Reducing back pressure is a good thing. that's what all those high performance exhausts are intended to do.

I've got my muffler removed with a straight pipe to the tip. Sounds amazing and only took a half hour at my shop. The noise is deep and throaty, sounds great on acceleration when you really punch it.

Yea thats why I went with the muffler...I think it'd be a bit too loud for my kids sitting in back. The cheapo muffler should tone it down just enough.

I have heard that straight piping small motors like this can warp your exhaust valve is this true?

Where did you hear that? No way thats true. AFAIK you can remove the whole exhaust to the manifold/headers if you wanted and it shouldn't cause any problems other than hearing loss.

Well I have heard it on a few different car forums, and a tech at a tow truck shop... Not very good sources but I just wanted to make sure. Thanks for clearing it up :) I will run this setup very soon!

ive been running 2.5in with only a tiny resonator for couple thousand miles now and no problems other than personal taste things.

Just be aware by removing the muffler at the flange, you're directing exhaust pulses straight up towards the rear of the car. Personally, I wasn't too excited about that idea which is why I never tried it (though for short duration/testing purposes I can't imagine it would hurt anything).

After some more driving I'm pretty happy with my temporary solution, though I feel I'm loosing a little bit of power up top for street driving since I'm leaving the silencer in.

Yeah I did see it is now point straight up, kind of a bummer. Here is the video I promised!
