FYI skylines are no longer legal to import in the US. they were for a time period by motorex and now only certain ones are (see below).
it IS that big of a pain to get any car not approved by the NHTSA titled and registered in the US. vehicles sold in other countries but not the US do not meet US:
-crash test standards
-emissions standards
-safety standards
-lighting standards
if it's not on the approved list you're not going to import it legally. there are ways to import illegally (i.e. an evo titled as a mirage) but 1) it's illegal, and 2) it's hard to get through customs (can be done but customs isn't supposed to allow complete road vehicles that are unapproved to come into the country)
Many Skylines were subsequently imported through Motorex. This lasted until late 2005, when the NHTSA became informed that not all 1990 through 1999 Skyline models would perform identically in crash testing. Motorex had submitted information for only the R33, and told the NHTSA that it was sufficient for all R32, R33, and R34 models[

After that, only these 1996-1998 models are eligible for importation. In March 2006, Motorex ceased all imports and Motorex principal Hiroaki "Hiro" Nanahoshi was arrested and held on $1 million bail on financial, kidnapping, and assault charges.
