i cut the tape into 1/4 inch thickness and traced the flames out. then filled in the outlines... i would never take a razor to my car....

I didn't think anyone would be stupid enough to do that, but you never know...

That sounds like it'd take a while.

wmbeaver, nice pics. Probably a noob question, but how do you get the pics where the background is blurred? Makes the car look fast :)

I too am a newb, but from the little I do know: panning the camera to track the car, so the car is in the same spot in frame while the shutter's open, but it moves enough to get the background blurry. Note that the wheels are also blurred.

Yep. The tricky part is trying to follow the car horizontally, without moving vertically. It takes practice to really nail it. I usually shoot at about 1/80 sec to about 1/125 sec.

That was more the info I was looking for, shutter speed, etc. I'm using a D60. I imagine it will just take practice. That last event was really my first time using the camera. The other autox I just shot from the time vehicle lazily.

Here's the settings I usually shoot at. Keep in mind that most autocrosses are during very bright times of day.

I shoot in S mode
Bring the Exposure Compensation to -5
ISO 200 (Go lower if you can, then adjust using exp. comp.)
Shutter speed of anywhere from 1/80-1/125 for panning. For just 'normal' shots, I use a shutter speed of like 1/250 or higher if I can.
Practice. You'll get the hang of it after a few events, then the more you do, the easier it is. I have a D50.

And to keep it on topic:

If you click on the pictures, it will bring you to a page where you have the option of viewing different sizes (at the top of the image), and at the lower right of the page, look for something that says 'Additional Information', then click on 'More Properties', and it will show you everything you'll ever need to know about the image.

This is my new car at its first autocross. I still have the Miata as my official autocross car.

you have your numbers wrong... should be 323 :p

(i know the 3 isn't the protege...)

This weekend, baby did a bad bad thing (sssh)

In my defense, it was 100* in Birmingham and the P5 has AC, comfy seats, and a roof LOL. I haven't autoxed this car in OVER 3 years, and I had an absolute blast. Definitely had to work hard for every second in the Protege, as it's not NEARLY as easy to drive fast as the Miata (but let's face it, one's a purpose built machine, one's not). The miata will be back in the limelight this weekend, but Ol' Blue was hurtin for a work out. I ran SM because, though I got annihilated by a WRX and an EVO on R-Comps, the class actually had more than 1 competitor, so it was fun to see what an N/A protege on half-decent street tires would do. The answer is, obviously: p0wn3d!

In any case, less talky, more picy
